Cori Ander's Rag

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
It takes some courage to upload an arrangement of this amazing piece just a day after Swedish ukelele wizard Johannes Alvinder (Cori Ander, the artist formerly known as LillNisse) posted it. But, at Cori Ander's urging, here it is.

When I listened to Johannes' original ukelele solo I pictured a turn-of-the-century city park, with a small group of musicians playing on a bandstand. I tried not to cover up the wonderful ukelele, just add a little to it.

Artwork is a photo of a necklace owned by my Swedish-American grandmother, who listened to this piece when it was first performed live in Highland, Illinois in 1906. Or maybe it's just a picture I found on the Internet.

Ukelele: Johannes Alvinder
Guitar: Tom Atwood

Original version (Coriander Rag): http://www.macjams.com/song/song_profile.php?lid=11834 (For a ukelele thrill ride please listen to this original version. Some of the nuances were lost in my version, covered up by the park band. The original is a classic.)

You are absolutely the best!
You have such a nice way of arranging things. This is a great improvement on the already great original. It sounds totally natural and "of a piece". I'm glad Johannes encouraged you to post this.

Great
I was so surprised when you mailed me a first version of this.
I could never ever have imagined to do something like this,
or that it was even possible!

You wrote: "Just for fun. I 'arranged' your rag for guitar and
park band. Hope you enjoy it!".

Of course I immediately begged you to post this just-for-
fun-creation! It is really beautiful this way! Thanks a lot Tom!
Made my day!

The Good Old Days
When popular music actually had sweet melodies. Very
nice to both you gentlemen. Love the ukelele and the
band.

Sweet
Beautiful, fun, lilting addition to the lilting-est thing on
MacJams. I love the way you liked the tune so much you
just had to join in. Nice use of those Jampack
instruments...

This is what this site is all about!
Tom, this is the very best sort of appreciation a person
could offer, I think. Cori Ander's original track is great,
and this doesn't supplant it, but this reveals the tune in a
new way...

You've made a whole painting, a whole soundscape. It's
actually sort of Sgt. Pepper-esque, perfection in
miniature.

I'm tellin' ya, as I posted on the other version: tuba and
uke, man, tuba and uke. Now you gotta find that 'musical
saw' preset.

This is so much fun! So good hearted! I'm really
impressed, too, with the skill it took to do this. It works
for me on every level musically, and on the 'human' level
as well.

Well. Gotta work on my shred metal version...

How fun is this?!
Love it. Great uke playing. We need more ukelele these
days. Tom, great arrangement and guitar playing. Fun to
listen to and very well done.

It really takes me back. Of course, I was a park pidgeon back
in that lifetime, but I loved the music just the same.

Damn... that is just so fine.
No doubt about it! It is the turn of the last century.
Families are enjoying a Saturday in the town square on a
hot summer day. A group of boys are playing kick the
can, while the girls stand aside giggling and pointing.
Everyone smiles as they greet one another. And the band
plays on....
a simpler time, long gone.

Your grandmother, huh?
I'd really love to hear the story of how she made her way from Sweden to Seattle then to Highland. It must be quite the tale *cough* embellishment *cough*.

I'm willing to bet that the necklace is possibly from around the turn of the century (maybe even 1906) since the Scandinavian population in Seattle exploded a thousandfold during the first ten years of the century. Even today, the city is packed with Swedes and Norwegians and there's a huge rivalry between them, which resembles the whole East Coast/West Coast rap battle.

This has nothing to do with ukeleles or Cori Ander's wonderful song or your wonderful arrangement. I'm starting to wonder what type of drugs you're on, though. Your output is staggering and amazing.

Really great, as per usual, Tom.

Your grandmother, huh?
I'm having a hard but humorous time trying to picture the Swedes and
Norwegians in Seattle as some turn of the 20th century rap gangstas.
I'd go see that movie.

A treasure!
The guitar and other additions on this version really
give this tune some warmth and fullness without
dragging it down at all. I really enjoyed this. It's
like a childhood memory... and I listened with wide-
eyed wonder.

you achieved your objective brilliantly!
This is a great blend of sounds, Tom; you added just the
right combination of sounds (both live guitar and JP4) to
Johannes' wonderful ukelele playing.

There is room for both versions; they are equally good, in
slightly different ways.

It is truly a challenge to balance acoustic and synthed
instruments, and you have risen to it masterfully. The mix
is seamless; the acoustic instruments carry the overall
sound with enough strength to make it seem ALL live.

You have definitely achieved your objective of painting a
vivid soundscape of a park band concert in the early
1900s. This sounds like music which would accompany a
PBS documentary of that era.

Wonderful job!

Uke power
This is lovely ... it works well with a much fuller
sound. The tune is transformed into something quite
different from the original. Very nicely done.

Treat
Hey, how come nobody has commented on this song in 17 months?

This is a real treat, 'cause I get to hear Johannes playe the Uke, something I never heard before (at least not while sober), and I get to hear an amazingly tasteful, charming, delightful arrangement by you.

This is an example of what MacJams can produce at its very best -- two excellent and like-minded musicians in different countries combining forces to produce something unique and of high quality.
