Wish I could give you the kind of detailed critique you post on my
pieces, Cameron, but my mind doesn't work that way. Instead, I will
just tell you that I found this to be a very affecting piece, and very
effective. Your use of dynamics, especially among the brass and
clarinets, is among the best I have heard. The harp, symbolic of time, is
also a perfect device for you to build this meditation around. Excellent
music for reflection. Minimal, yet accessible. I really enjoyed this.

You bring up an interesting point about JP4, and this applies to sounds in general.

One of the most important aspects of music is DYNAMICS. This adds greatly to the expressiveness of a sound, even "cheesy" ones, and loops! It's all how they fit together in a balanced sound-field. Even the "nicest" sound -- synthesized OR live -- can grate on the ears if it is too loud or soft.

Dynamics go a long way towards making music expressive and emotional.

Artistic Reflection
I approach all music, indeed life itself, emotionally and this hits home
in that vein. The plucked strings set a very pensive, serious, thinking
mood. I listened before I read and was gratified to see that I had picked
up on at least some of what you had gone for here. Or should I say
what you were experiencing. The music just pulsates with someone
doing some heavy thinking. I picture a library or study full of beautiful
furniture, works of art and lots of books and manuscripts. You are
pacing around looking out of a window as the sun comes up. Your
thoughts rise and fall with the music but I don't hear a resolution. More
of an acceptance of what is and what will be. Life is a compromise and
happiness is a journey. I try and not be too harsh a critic of myself. It is
a role that other people are only too willing to take on.

Recently, I have gotten into the habit of listening to new pieces BEFORE reading everyone's comments. Although this can result in pointing out the same things over and over again, it also adds objectivity and maximizes "fresh ears". Sweet and soulful
I'm glad, Parichayaka, that you enjoyed this. The viola sound -- and all the others in this piece -- are from JamPack 4.

No synthesized sound can truly replace the "real thing", but JP4 is pretty good. VERY good, in fact. I have yet to find better orchestral synthed sounds. If anyone knows of ones better than JP4, please let me know!

Exquisite!
The swell of the horns is what captures me the most. The subtle
woodwinds simply snuck up on me. The continuum of the harp lays the
groundwork of a "three-layered" sound field. Not only does it have
great left-to-right seperation, but creates a front-to-rear, top-to-
bottom ambience as a surrounding emotional envelope.

As the listener, I am walking through the players. Rather than them
being static, they too, are moving around me, creating a push-pull
emotion that evokes stark realism. This 3-D effect also is conveyed in
the two dimensional artwork. The arrangement and dynamics are
breathtaking. This is now on my iPod AND cell phone!

I've been offline for almost two weeks, and will prolly get into trouble
for jump'n to the 'top' of my 45 MJ alerts, but you've been away the
longest, Cameron.

I'm sure that I can speak for many when I say, that MJ's surely has
missed you. Music like this piece is one of the many reasons why your
space here has felt phat, but not empty. This piece immediately went
to a place of resonance within... So gentle, it's expressed w/ rich warm
coloring and soft textures, while having everything precisely in it's
place. Complex, yet simple.

By the sounds of this, I can tell that it REALLY was a tough year for you
and as well, it has been for me too. I do hope that things are better for
you in the upcoming days of this spank'n new year.

Discordant but Delightful
In my experience, the two life situations that evoke the most creativity
are: 1) Love and 2) Adversity.

Love seems to produce an obvious wellspring and a burst of creativity.
But adversity's production is much more subtle and delayed. Perhaps
it's because our creativity is pressed into service during times of trial
as a salve for our aching spirits and its byproducts don't emerge until
after our soul's been steadied and the crises have past.

This is a very stirring piece, with subtle dissonance quietly merging
into lovely melody on the cusp of distress. Very artful... very
emotional... and very lovely.

Here's wishing you --- and all MacJammers --- more of #1's
inspiration in 2006!

Serenity and reverence
Hard to describe this piece, Cameron. Dissonance (even if it is subtle, as it
is here) is usually not something to create a sense of calm, but it does so
here and in a lovely and contemplative way, reaching and drawing in.

This is a remarkable piece in so many ways. Your use of dynamics here is
just exquisite, with the steady, constant pace of the harp underlying all
else, like the steady passage of time.

Mysti, many thanks for lending your musical ear and your always perceptive comments to this piece today. You definitely received the musical message I was sending, and I appreciate your awareness and sensitivity.

I'm glad that the dissonance is not "too much". Lately I am striving to incorporate more of that in a few of my pieces, without tipping over into unpleasantness. Just enough to gently nudge the listener in both soothing, yet stimulating ways. This is a great challenge, and a worthy one for me to explore.

Yes!
Woven textures of sounds, a nice parallel to how lives weave together in interesting ways. The compostion has a living quality. Maybe the underpinning piano riff has a heart beat to it. Living and organic. The piece indeed seems to be a journey of sorts. I love the repeating melodies, subtle and lovely. There is such a sense of reflection. Pretty. The flow is hypnotic.

Strange as I listened, because to me this song feels like birth and evolution as it starts out with a "water drop", forming into a beautiful array of harmonies! And oh those harmonies! Great, thick and magical string harmonies! I'll give you prize for most massive harmony which I'm sure that classical background definitely influences!

Contemplative streams of...
musical consciousness. LIstening to this piece begin,
I experience the sensation of time slowing down and
my mind coming to a place of rest... stopping it's harried
activity. As the violin enters in, it is as if a new line of
thought on the past and reflecting on what it could mean
for the future. The french horn replies... another aspect, another pause, maybe another consideration.
As the song returns to the beginning treatment... brought
back again to the original reflections on thoughts and
feelings of life.

No musical input, except to say this is a beautiful
composition.

Very nice work
Designed especially for being contemplative, I think. The long, drawn out
chords with subtle shifts, the insistent harp ostinato, the occasional
dissonance, all are well done. Your dynamic ebb and flow is also
extremely well done. Either your keyboard is set exactly right, or you
spent a great deal of time fine-tuning those dynamics, or both. I'm
hoping that the 'non-creativity' I personally am experiencing right now is
a prelude to a new creativity that's half as good sounding as this.

Happy new year
Ooo, very nice chord substitutions at the ending of your phrases. Delicate,
hypnotic, gentle, a sense of reflection without nostalgia, peace without
sentimentality, very hard to do. Has a roughness to the strings that
brings intimacy. Excellent use of instruments, mix and textures, pacing
and voicings, effects and room size. Hope without mere wishful thinking,
the kind of hope borne in the face of hardships, more than perseverance,
different than faith, and kind of self-certainty and centeredness. Really
well done.

Not qualified to critique this
I love this piece. I learned to love listening to classical music from listening to what my father played on the stereo when we were growing up. It drove my mom crazy because he always wanted it really loud, so when she was away shopping.... Even this, loud would feel soft, but you could pick out the parts. Dad passed away from prostate cancer several years ago, I wish I could share this with him - he would love it.

Now I'm off to begin a classical music library on the laptop, beginning with your fine music. Good for my soul to mix it up a bit and add variety to the rock n' roll I usually listen to. Thanks for being gracious in sharing your music.

Beautiful
The violin (viola?) at the beginning is very affecting. The other strings
entering make a beautiful counterpoint.

The slow crescendo of the brass and ww's is very nice.

Some of the chord progression choices are unexpected, but well done.

Another brass crescendo fading into a ww decrescendo -- great idea
and beautifully executed.

The bassoon fits very well into this piece.

The reverb settings on the harp sounds do add to the realism. Sounds
a bit like plate reverb on the harp.

By the way, I saw that you're from Bisbee, Arizona. I don't see that
name too often. My choir director from high school was named Mr.
Bisbee. He was from California.

This whole piece sounds something like the soundtrack to "Battlestar
Galactica" when everybody is about to get blown to smithereens by the

Peaceful
This is very good. Your orchestration is excellent; you can hear this
entirely as a colour piece, with the colours subtly changing all along. It
creates a "calm after the storm" feeling. You use traditional harmony
in an original way; at no point did I feel you were resorting to harmonic
clich�s. Only thing I found myself wondering about was the
repetition... I'm not exactly sure how much of the beginning is
recapitulated, but it felt like a lot, which in principal is fine, but I
wonder if you've considered modifying things a bit during the recap (or
a bit more, if indeed there are some changes).

It's been a long time since you submitted this. Are there other
compositions in the works? You obviously have a gift; I hope you are
able to find time for it.

Cameron,
This is just beautiful. I am so taken by the pensive quality of the composition itself, and your orchestration is so restrained and well-intentioned. You always have just the right instrument to thrown into the mix to carry the deep thoughts forward. The harp (?) is almost an ostinato to the whole thing and keeps all the elements together. This one is going on my iPod for sure. Thank you for sharing such wonderful music with all of us. You are a real artist and there is much I can learn here. I'll be listening to more of your music straight away.

YES, as a matter of fact, I *DO* have a copy of Brophy's Technical Studies for horn! I use it occasionally.

How COOL that he's your dad!

Someday soon I will actually post a horn piece on this site. It's rather ironic that I'm a professional horn player, yet have avoided recording myself and submitted any of my horn comps here. I'll have more time to do that starting in Feb.07 during an extended layoff from "Phantom".

I hope 2006 went well for you
I hadn't listened to this piece before, and it's an absolute gem. The mood is consistently pensive, maybe a little hopeful, and there is just a bit of an arc to the composition, with occasional high points when the brass and the flutes come in. In fact, I would have been happy if the piece had ended on that flute passage 3/4 of the way through. To me a piece like this doesn't need an ABA or ABACA or whatever form that closes symmetrically. A linear development is fine with me.

Writing and arrangement of this are great. Downloaded.

It's always a surprise to receive new comments on songs that have been here for more than a year. (I'm trying to be better about responding to comments on old stuff.)

Compositional forms have always been challenging for me; I don't understand them as well as I should, having gone to a music conservatory! I wish I'd paid better attention in my form and analysis classes now.

For some reason I felt that this piece needed to be its present length. I had experimented with shorter versions earlier but they just didn't feel right.

	Nice! At first I thought, it would be a standard type of classical piece one hears online..then the solo string came in.. then the musical thought started showing itself..working out it's ideas. Really liked the harmonies you use. Sort of reminded me of Copland. Wonderful music!

Hearing this I'm seeing
a vision of a snow storm in jackson Ha! Bet traffic was a nightmare. Now, to what I really came for. I am technically ignorant about this kind of music and, well music in general, but I do know what I like. I do find this piece special and I think I know why. Not only is everything sonically appealing with excellent placement, but it presents strong emotions. I think all great art hits our two main emotions (happiness and sadness) with enough force to leave a positive lasting impression.
That's what this piece of music has done for me.

Ode to a Previous Day
Came back for another listen, 'cos this piece deserves repeated listens. I really like the sense of time in this piece. Both sonically and spatially, the piece has its own timeworld. The chord spacings are uniformly gorgeous, especially when you blend chord types and mix them into a polytonal amorphous mass. Dissonant, but not just dissonant for its own sake. The bassoons and the writing for the bassoons is both effective and lovely. A piece with a lot of impact!
