Description

I really love McBoy! Imean, besides the fact that he is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard, he is also a pretty sweet guy. I jumped when he suggested that we play something for Curry to celebrate the release of SOUND OF WOOD, Curry's great new cd. I also got very scared knowing that i was once again gonna have to try and play something on a McBoy song...A couple of days later i got this very cool tune to play...very bluesy to me...the only instructions were, "don't step on djembe solo"...in 35 years, I have never had anyone say that to me!...Any way it was a great groove and i messed with it for about a week and here it is.

We both (me and McB) want to say a hearty congratulations to Curry...he is another world class human and deserves every good thing. He is a treasure to us all at MacJams!

Hopefully this little tribute will get to him in his new home, and he will receive it with all the love with which it was sent!

and thanks McBoy for treating me so nice!

McBoy has a beautiful studio on his estate in Key Largo. State of the art - complete with dining area and on call chef. I dind't get a good look into the wine cellar, cuz McBoy is kinda into his wine, ya know?...any way, the guest quarters were really nice, especially the wall of classic guitars there for me to play while I was waiting to get into the STUDIO....but that's not the studio we used to record this tho....

Great Groove
Ziti, I'm glad to hear that even you get scared at playing on a Mcboy
song, but you managed to over come your fear and play some great
parts. Mcboy...well what can you say another great bed to help other
MacJammers be a part of the Mcboy experience.

Ziti, what estate? When I recorded with Mcboy he told me he lived out
of his car parked at the beach and I had to get a room at the local
Motel 8.

And lastly, Congradulations to Curry, he certainly has the talent.

me??? live with McBoy....i don't know if there is a large enough valium made
to get me into that situation...seriously to all the guitar afficinados on MJ, and
there are a ton of us....but to those who dont actually Play the thing...Our
McBoy is a TERRIFYINGLY great guitarist. I know, all his stuff sounds good,
but to really appreciate the guy, i think you have to be a guitar player. He can
play anything he wants and play it great. He has the very rare combination of
technique and soul, and also the rarer combination of composer and
improviser. He scares the hell out of me. He could play me under the table,
down broadway, and back with out breaking a sweat. I am honored that he
has even noticed my contributions here at MJ, never mind giving me the
encouragement he has given me. Plus i just really have a good time teasing
him about everything.

He has accomplished a lot in a business where accomplishment is next to
impossible and he has my total respect. I hope someday to shake his hand
and say thanks in person.

Nah, you don't need valium; just eat a few bananas before you perform, and
they should calm the nerves! (Bananas are supposed to have a natural beta-
blocker, and many classical musicians swear by 'em. Others swear by
prescription beta blockers; to each his own, I guess!)

Hey, you don't have to convince me of McBoy's talents! I've played guitar for
35 years (the same song, over and over...), and besides being a composer/
theorist at the university at which I teach, I've also been teaching classical
guitar there for a number of years. I completely agree with you that he
(they?) is an amazing musician!

How to say this . . .
Now don't get me wrong guys cuz I downloaded this just like
everybody else and there's a ton of incredible stuff on it I wouldn't
attempt in my dreams . . .

But . . . it seems to me that when you two get together, you're almost
too in awe of each other. It's like you're being too polite to each other.

It's almost like two heavyweights dancing around in the ring jabbing
and blocking when the audience is screaming for a slugfest.

When the top two gunslingers on the site get together, I personally
would love to see a shootout . . . with blood.

Having said that, the structure of the song blew me away, every time I
thought I knew where it was going, it took a twist, a turn or a little
more time, and each unexpected curve was better than the last one.

Incredible.

How to say this . . .
hmmmmm....well I can't speak for Mcb, but I don't know if I enjoy those kind
of guitar duels you speak of. In that situation, guitars begin to sound like
cats in mating season to me...all bluster and noise.

I have had the opportunity to be the host of a regular jam night in a city close
by, kind of a big club. I would always start the show with my band and play a
few of our songs, then bring the individual jammers up to play within my
band...it really helped the overall quality of the music...except for the guitar
players. Instead of playing within the band situaion and taking their solos in
turn, it would devolve into all these guys coming up and trying to CUT me.
The music was awful mostly when this happened, but the people loved it,
perceiving it to be me vanquishing challengers when i took the last solo to
guide the band back into the arrangement...it was hugly popular with the
crowd
I took a lot of crap because of this from musicians who felt like i was
showboating cuz I always took the last solo, thus not giving them that last
shot at "winning"the perceived dual. I just was really trying to end the song
corectly buy rallying the band back to the arranged ending. That left a sour
taste. Eventually, i changed the format of the jam to where I left the stage for
most of the night to avoid these shoot outs. The overall music suffered,
arrangement and tightness wise, but I found that the visiting guitarists played
much better this way. The didnt feel compelled to compete, and played their
hearts more freely. And I did not have to be the gunslinger, a role i really
dont enjoy at all.

Playing with McBoy in a competive fashion would be toal FOLLY for me. I
suspect he has forgotten more about the guitar than I know. If the
opportunity arises for me to add my voice to something that McBoy sends me
I am ecstatic. That I could best him in any way is not something i would ever
consider. But to make music WITH him is really really fun and frankly, quite
a priveledge. I am not afraid to play blues with anybody...but McBoys musical
repetoire goes far beyond blues, into styles in areas I can only sniff at. He is
a scary dude. He is also a terrific guy who has worked his ass off to get
where he is, and I salute him.
