Description

I wanted to try out a new mic and pre-amp that I've been trying to set up for a long time (had to buy everything piece by piece). It's brand new, and I haven't a clue how to equalize it or make it sound exactly right, but it was fun using a new set-up. I used the new mic on the primary vocals and the old set-up for the back-up. I understand this is a very rudimentary song (just bass and drums and vocals) but I figured what the heck, post it anyway.

Ooh!
The new mic brings out a bunch of new texture in your voice, which is
great because I think you have one of the richest voices I've ever heard.
The detail the condensor adds (which mic did you get) really makes it
sound as though you're singing right into my ear.

I enjoy this minimal approach as it is, but would also enjoy hearing a
version with a few (just a few) more instrumental touches for variety.
From the song description, it sounds as though that's your intention, I
just want to say that I think it's a great idea to keep going with this
wonderful song.

Ooh!
Thanks, ledeb! It's an MXL (I think it's Behringer, but I'd have to check) and a
pretty cheap pre-amp. Can't say I spent a ton of money on anything, but it
took me awhile to get all the components (the cords and cables and stuff
included). I have the Shure set up all the time, so recording on the condensor
takes some futzing around, but I've been dying to try it out. It has a very
different sound and requires a completely different mic technique (one which
I'm still learning).

Good equipment
I really like the sound of this. Your voice has a lot of detail, breath
sounds, an occasional cracking sound, and it all comes through
beautifully with this mic/preamp combo. A very nice and open sound.

I'm guessing that somewhere in your setup some mids are cut to get
that open sound, but that works fine with your voice.

Oops: "and *now* my heart fr*o*zen in ice". Twice a little distortion.
Watch those levels.

Oh, cool song too. Very Julie London, except that you have a darker
voice.

Good equipment
Thnak you, Vic! I ended up not touching the equalizer because I wasn't sure
what to do (production has never been my strong suit). So anything you're
hearing is just the default settings. As for the peaking, yes, this mic is so
much more sensitive than my other one that I was trouble trying to figure out
distance and volume. I need to work on my mic technique, that's for sure.

Thanks for sharing your talent here Joanna. You have a delightful style.
You bring out a nice quality in your voice with this dinner jazz style.

When many top artist come up for me to listen to I gravitate towards you
cause you have musical influences that hit me strong when I was younger.
I've said it before but you keep Julie London's name alive in what she
stood for musically. It is so nice to have people share not the run of the
mill cookie cutter music.

joanna - too much time between songs! Excellent to hear you again!

I love the backing vocals on this one. perhaps my favorite part of the
song! this has great commercial appeal about it. it could be used with a
whole variety of products, like stain removers, dust busters,
electronics, foods, and so on!

the lyrical aspect is a bit tricky. the song goes from being playful,
teasing, and coy to mature and accusatory. by the end of the song, i
was apologizing! seriously!

your vocals are as alluring as a noir novel and your delivery is
impeccable as always. I'm glad the piece is not overworked with
extraneous elements, but kept instrumentally simple. i could certainly
hear some muted trumpet or slide trombone burps, but would prefer
the real instruments over loops.

	Great Your voice has such strength and character. And your mic sounds just great. I hear bitterness here, fitting with the lyrics. The background vocals are almost mocking, as if echoing your sentiments in a sarcastic way. The whole thing sound fittingly bitter (but in a good way!). Nice work, Joanna. Excellent track
Cudos for being consistently good. You never disappoint me, how do you manage to do so? Very classy tune.
I am not completely convinced with the new sound, though - it has more complexity and presense, but I am affraid it lacks a bit of the luxurious warmth you use to radiate with the earlier settings... tweak some knobs on that pre-amp, may be?
