Lyrics
RG Paddler - Small Song

I should be dreaming
But I just can't sleep
Don't want to lose you - forever
Nighttime - it whispers
"you time ain't long"
Soon you'll be leaving your aching heart
The Green of the summer
The Gold of the Spring
Are melting together
To make everything feel like home

Tired of the killing
Tired of the war
People you meet - got
nothing to love
When you feel weak
And no-one hears you crying
I hope you'll remember
That we're all born dying

You wake up,you swim in the ocean of life
You struggle to breathe in
The cruel morning light
The eyes of the blind lead you into the sun
You sail by the North Star where we shall return
Once again - we shall be one

I can be many
And I can be none
You are my reason
Fo going on

just for yourself
man. good one.

sounds like you're singing just for yourself in a little room somewhere. you're in between just coming back, and needing to leave once again, and you're trying to delay by singing this song to yourself.

it's sad and hopeful. a gem.

thanks

I'm home.
Thanks smokeyvw - I'm aware that its probably quite an introspective song.I just did a first gig in ages (its 2.00am in the morning here) and I'm on a complete high.It was a private club I just played at - quite a few old folk and one or two sexy young girls but whatever - I do the piano well but tend to improvise with the lyrics a bit i.e tonight - I was set up on the dancefloor and the lights were still flashing - everytime the lights turned to white - I could actually read some of the lyrics but inbetween I was making it up and singing shit like 'you'll never know what the words were meant to be' - it's a good icebreaker for the audience cos then they feel like you are human and you don't give a toss wether they clap or not.It was a boathouse on the edge of the lake and I didn't know what to expect when turning up.It was a load of people just getting together - which is my best kind of gig - I sang loads of old jazz standards - come fly with me,aint misbehavin',blueberry hill, what a wonderful world - that kind of stuff. The people really got into it - I don't do polished gigs as a solo performer - and tonight I was lucky because I turned up with a keyboard and a 4 books of songs - and luckily they had a good p.a and a mic - the stand was a straight stand so I had to do 4 hours with the mic between my legs infront of the piano - its rough but my kind of gig - it means that during blues solos - you cant wonder up or down the keyboard too much - because the mic stand is in the way - a challenge! I'm on a complete high because a) everyone was having a good time b) everyone was dancing c) I got bought lots of beer d) I got paid (: The only trouble I have now is winding down and that usually means drinking alot of beer.My uncle was a jazz saxophonist and he was the same - never made a fortune - never became bitter or twisted that he wasn't rich and still plays and still gets drunk out of his mind - must be in the blood. So I came back and it was really good to read your comment. Its a bit of a downer song I've posted here and if anything sums up my love for artists like Nick Drake,Nick Cave - Nightclubs and Danceclubs are great but sometimes there are days where I look through my record collection and think 'naaah' to most of them because its not how I feel - I need something to 'flop' to - something to say to myself - ok - I don't know what the fuck the world is about - but I can agree with this guy and what he's saying - its shit but beautiful a the same time.Thats how I felt and thats the kind of song I tried to write.I recorded the piano just as an improvisation. When I came to writing the lyrics - I'd been awake for 36 hours with odd hours of half dreaming in-between just cos I've been trying to get out of debt by taking on any work available no matter what it is.Last night I just sort of gave in to my over-tiredness and wrote those fairly depressing lyrics. But listening to it now, after I got 5hours sleep and did a good gig I don't think I did so bad.I think it is a downer song - and is only to be listened to occasionally when the mood is right - personally thats when I feel shite. And everybody does at some point so I hope this goes some way to somebody releasing some of the stress of well - just being alive sometimes. Thanks

"It whispers"
I found this touching. It has a haunting quality to it and something about its simplicity is breathtaking. Moving, yet gentle. I'm glad you posted it.
