	welcome... this little tango is fun. I could hear this playing in the background of some movie with Steve Martin and Gilda Radner (if she were still with us) dancing in some Casa Blanco hole-in-the-wall. Very deadpan delivery sells the song. Welcome to MJ. Jack

Big smirk
It's hard not to like a tango... and and your lyrics flow nicely within the rhythm. I loved the smirky ending. And although the recording was a little muddy-sounding, all that doesn't matter given the 4 letters and 4 numbers you uttered above that make this all astounding... "DMCS" and "1989". Wow, I got started in writing music with DMCS... the OLD one on the Apple ][. Anyway, quite enjoyable ditty indeed. Welcome to Macjams, I hope you are looking at upgrading your Mac Plus soon :-)

Ah, yes, DMCS was all the rage on the Net in 1989. Of late I have looked high and low for anything close to matching it, but nope. Not for 49 bucks.

Actually, the fruitlessness of that quest led me to conclude that I must leave behind the past and abandon its methods -- and then finally wholly to embrace modern ways of composing -- which drove me kicking and screaming into the arms of GB, and so then to you all here.

The tortuous road of ignorance led me to the light. D'oh!

now that you are here...
You said "Of late I have looked high and low for anything close to matching it, but nope. Not for 49 bucks." Well, now that you have been drawn to the dark side, it is safe to let you know about a couple of products dangerously like DMCS, maybe even better (at least in my opinion.) For $70, you can get a really nice shareware composition tool, that will export to MIDI (which you can feed into GB for final mixing... it is called "Harmony Assistant", and can be found here: http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/harmony.htm

It's little brother, "Melody Assistant" is only $20, and has fewer features, but is still quite amazing: http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/melody.htm

There are other products out there of varying feature set and complexity and price... depends on what you want to do. But HA does a lot of things really well, and once you pay the shareware price, upgrades are FREE forever, and the support is superb. I'm a happy customer. :-) And you can download a fully-functioning demo for free, to see how it works. My only complaint is the user interface is a LITTLE cluttered and takes some getting used to.

I used it for awhile....
.... but the plethora of leeeeeeetle tiny icons and the user interface finally defeated me, gack. (I don't play by the dots, anyway; what little I know, learned from DMCS.)

I'm too old to screw around with a steep software learning curve.

But thanks for the pointers - now I am a GB convert.

my method
I chose a tango I had heard (Hernando's Hideaway) and gave it some good listens.

I sat down at my screen and fiddled with my music program til I could make it sound like my handy casio that could play a tango rhythm....

Then I swiped the entire structure of the song, and wrote the lyrics -- as I recall, it was pretty easy to write in that rhythm. I think getting the rhythm was the key for me. And then, somehow, the words were easy to write to that rhythm.
