Description
This one's been gestating for several months now. I think the lyrics speak for themselves.

This was recorded in GarageBand and then mixed in Logic Express. I'm not happy at all with the mix, but I've been mixing and mixing and mixing and just can't seem to get it right, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears (which is really odd looking and just a bit off-putting.)

Smokin' Bass
Gee, I wonder if you're a bassist or not? :-)

I think my favorite part of this is the bridge with the dreamy oohey-ah's. The harmonies are really tight and remind me of The Beach Boys, a little different than the rest of the song.

I don't think there could be a truer sentiment, that no one really has time to waste, so it's best to move forward and be happy. You have no idea how good it is to hear you singing these words.

I think the lead vocal should be in front a bit more. Right now, the bass seems to be taking up a little more space than the vocal. It's not the volume, but I think that there's some frequency hogging between the other instruments and Neil's...oops...I mean YOUR singing.

Very groovy and that bass line really does kill.

...but he's back in the basement.

I've gotten a lot of good feedback on strengthening the mix and, hopefully at some point I will have it ready to post again.

Interestingly enough, the bridge came about as an acident. I had a whole other idea of how it was going to sound, but it just didn't work out and somehow, this appeared, as if by magic. :)

Good tune
Lyrics have a special meaning for me, although I'm not ready to accept this as my fate yet.
Dug the harmonies. Really gotta good song here. As Ledubtant mentioned, it conjures up the Beach Boys or similar group. This thing is gonna gel well once you get all the mixing stuff together. Maybe Alimar has some tips for you.

I think everyone has had a time where they could really identify with the lyrics. We've all been down that road. Some of us have to go down it a few times before we realize it's a dead end.

Nice one Joseph!
The lyrics: before I even listen to the tune, your lyrics really get me - sad but hopeful - attaboy!

The performance: sounds to me like you're hitting those notes better than ever Joseph. All the playing works here. I especially like the jangly electric sound. Excellent harmonies- especially the top one (so hard to get them that accurate)!

The mix: to me it sounds like you've mixed on 'phones (which I do all the time, so no criticism intended), and what that seems to do is allow a boomy bass to sneak through. I like what you've done with the bass, but it sounds a little uncontrolled (in the sound sense) and could probably do with some tightening up with compression. How many guitar tracks do you have? It sounds very busy in that department - maybe separating them right and left a little more? The delay on the electric sounding track might also be causing some clutter that you maybe don't need. Another possible source of crowding might be if you have double tracked the vocals.

Overall: Despite the mix comments (you did ask for suggestions!), I like this a lot - always difficult to do the big sound mixes!

Right on the money...
...with the headphones. And mixing in Logic is a whle different animal, but I'm loving it. Was able to add a lot more control over the mix than in GB already, plus, I've gotten a lot of great advice on specifics, particularly from our mutual partner in crime, Mr. RT Cooper.

You're right as well about the proponderance of guitar and vocal tracks. I really have them packed in there, trying to get this certain "sound" I have in my head. I come close, but it tends to get muddied up before I get there.

Stop hiding!
You sound like you're really unsure of your voice. It's like you hold back, and as a result your pitch wavers a bit when you hold long notes. But you prove through the amazing Eagles-sounding harmonies that YOU CAN SING. So do it already! Lyrics are good. Bass freaking rocks! Production is so-so. Drums are a bit boring. Guitar is - eh ... get Vic Holman to play the guitars for you.

Good Song
Very interesting song here both musically and lyrically. As far as the mix goes my feeble two cents would be that the rhythm guitar is too distant in the mix and needs to be brought forward with perhaps a little less reverb or whatever. Of course I am known as the worst producer on MacJams so what do I know? To my ears this was a very sixtyish folk rock kind of song. The Byrds, Youngbloods, even Neil Young which of course ain't too shabby as those are some cool folks!

I keep Neil Young in the basement
And I pull him out from time to time for a little inspiration.

I've gone through and worked with all the suggestions folks have made here and have sent me via e-mail and have another mix I'm much happier with, but I'm still tinkering with. I'm sure I'll post it at some point in the near future.

cool little tune. true to your love of the '80's.

maybe you already know this. on the guitar tracks use the compression plug-in. it has a list of presets to choose from. what also really helps tighten up guitars, is the highpass filter. set freq. around 270.

The mysterious world of compression
I've tinkered with compression on the vocals and in the overall mixing, but I haven't gotten around to really using it on the other instruments. Thanks for your suggestions, I've started playing with them to see what a difference it makes. So many little bells and whistles, so little time...

I hide my true talent....
...in the utility drawer next to the potato peeler. That way, I'll always know where to find it. :)

This song does have a very universal theme to it and, actually, was written as much for a friend of mine as it was for me. But, it does really dig deep into the emotions. And that's where all the best stuff comes from.

The lyrics
have been true for everyone at some time, I think, and that's one of the things that make this song so cool. Especially nice is the essentially hopeful, forward looking message. Some nice guitar work here that kind of makes me think of the Cure or Echo and the Bunnymen. The bass work is outstanding, although it seems very forward in the mix. The vocal seems good and up front at the beginning and then kind of seems to move back when the bass comes in. Love the bridge - excellent harmonies. This is nice work. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

Definitely...
...a little bit of Cure influence in the guitar work. As someone pointed out, I like to get a little bit of the 80s into everything I do.

One of the things I like about the "style" of a lot of stuff I do is the potential for some great harmony and backing vocals. I love very thick, rich multipart harmony. It's just so much fun to do, especiall since at 40 I can still hit the high notes. :)

guitar sound indeed mixed with a bit of Neil Young - sounds pretty good to me! I'd have to agree that the bass is thickening the sound up a bit and perhaps the whole thing could do with a little bit me punch - it's all a little distant and restrained. However, I really like the song and think those harmonies are working really well. Thanks for sharing.

Good Points
I think Jiguma makes some good points. The guitar tone in the background does not change and creates a sameness throughout the song. Could use more dynamics, softer and louder.
