Description

Roughly 9 min. piece written in 1989 for a CalArts graduate composers concert, was only performed that one night. It was originally written for MIDI sequence, 2 live performers and a Macintosh SE running HyperAnimator software. The sequences that use the "string" sounds at the beginning and end are from the original work, the middle section was completely re-worked with more modern sounds. I re-did the computer part using current OSX text to speech. Keep in mind that this was written in 1989 when the whole public awareness of viruses was first beginning. Back then there actually were Mac viruses and a couple classics are mentioned here (nVirs and SCORES). Probably the most involved project I've posted. I drafted my wife to reprise her role (she was in the original) and I did the other human, which was originally a housemate.

	Enjoyable Nice interplay of elements. Some parts were a little loud. Really gave me the feel of being in a virus-struck computer. Odd that I should find the digital voices more compelling than the human voices. I guess the computer had more entertaining lines. The piece is quite long. I linke the "just stay calm" part at the end. Very reassuring, like Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Thanks, yeah, I did have a lot of fun with the computer's lines (especially
when the "infection" is going on). That may well be the reason. The length
was I think originally part of what I had to do, I think it was required to be ~
10 minutes. Hopefully it doesn't make people want to run off before it's over.

Stephen Hawking gets FUNKY
and does a bit of Shakespeare too. Was that Twelfth Night
in there..? Agree with Rschletty about the Hal thing. Hey
you know that HAL was subliminal advertising for IBM
(next letter in the alphabet to IBM is HAL)? Apparently the
guy who wrote windows NT was the same guy that wrote
the VAX VMS system and the next letters in the alphabet
to VMS are WNT...Probably not true but great if you are
getting geeky over that 10th beer.....

Hmmm ok nerdy stuff over. Quite a piece all round. Very
Sci Fi and I'm a sucker for anything with gadgets in it..

Stephen Hawking gets FUNKY
At the time I was very intrigued by the idea of having the computer do a part
in a piece about a virus. It was fun and laborious (at least back in '89).

I've heard the IBM/Hal VMS/WNT stories before. Probably while getting geeky
over that 10th beer!

Yes, it was Twelfth Night iirc. As well as Airplane and a few other pop-culture
ref's.

Nice pacing in the first section -- I like the slow build-up
of intensity with the various voices, computerized and
otherwise, til the drum-groove kicks in. Then the
computer freaks!

This piece would be great in conjunction with some sort
of animation and abstract images projected on a screen. It
fairly screams "multi-media event"!!

The middle and later section began to lose my attention
just a bit. (This is when visuals would have been very
helpful, in a performance situation.)

But in a way, the slower pace of the latter part of the song
DID fit in well with the concept of a computer wrestling
with a virus.

You created a subtle and interesting "ethereal" quality in
this work, which is actually growing on me now, a few
moments after listening to it!

I definitely appreciate the time, effort and creativity that
went into this piece.

I really wish the text was there--but I ALWAYS want that (no demerits, of course!). This piece I found very engaging. I would've chosen to transistorize the human voice, too, though. Have you ever heard Skinny Puppy's First Aid? Sort of in the neighborhood--re: viruses (and aids particularly). You would probably like some of their tracks if you haven't already checked 'em out b4. "Stay calm...it's really not a big deal...." the text voice gives such a soma-infused performance! (BNW-A. Huxley) 9788!
