Kyrie

Description
This brief piece was something of an experiment, improvising the singing of close harmonies in the style of early sacred music, starting with the lowest voice and building upwards from there.

It was *almost* a straight improvisation--there were a couple of places where I had to go back and work out the harmonies.

Because I didn't want to just sing nonsense phrases, I chose the simple Latin verse of the "Kyrie."

(--Apologies for the mispronunciations in the Latin, which I'll fix at a later date when I expand this work.)

A distance church...
with sounds of prayer. Keep working at it! You have potential for this style which I admire. I always try to create music with a different religious flare but something is always missing... ah yes the choir. One of these days I will have a suitable piece for your voice. Mainly a religious piece. Keep on creating, for you are blessed with a gift.

Thanks for sharing
Patrick

Thank you Patrick :)
It's perhaps no surprise that your song "4:15 p.m. and the minutes after" has been one of my favorite downloads from MacJams and is on my playlist at work.

It's a song that communicates so beautifully, without words.
So, I appreciate your words here on this piece, and I sincerely look forward to that collaboration one day :)

Thanks for listening.

Yes. You have created an unspeakably beautiful piece here... I absolutely love it.

Why? Am I supposed to say why? Okay...

1. I love early music, but more specifically, I love late renaissance sacred polyphony. Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria, Morales, Josquin, Tallis -- all those guys.

2. There are a few contemporary composers who are strongly influenced by this music, such as Johan Tavener and Arvo Pärt, and this is kinda sorta in that tradition. I hope you will continue with more in this vein.

3. This is my favorite style of singing. You have a very pure, unaffected voice, perfect for this.

Wonderful work!

Thanks :)
Classical music was everywhere in our house; my parents had quite a library of vinyl LPs. I stumbled upon a recording of Vaughan-Williams "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" in my young teens that absolutely held me spellbound.
I must have listened to that record dozens of times; I was so fascinated at how it moved from major to minor and sounded different from what I had heard before.
I'm still fascinated by modal tones and textures, though Music Theory still boggles my brain!

So it's nice that I'm on the right track here. The discovery and journey is very fulfilling :)

Thanks so much for your comments here!

An inspiring piece of music...
I love this type of music, where beautiful words meet sacred music, in harmony, helped by a superb voice. This is a great work.

I am on the edge of my seat awaiting the next installment.

My current interests lie with Karl Jenkins, and he doesn't use, generally, real words, in his classical pieces, so this work was in keeping with what I have in my mind at the moment.

Take care.

Paul.

Apart from yourself ..
.. the only memorable experience (apart from listening to you) I have of this style is from David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" album. It's a style I really like - I don't know what the technical term is, but I like the way a single voice drops a tone and a new chord appears. This must have been a very powerful musical genre in days of old when the magic of the church was able to shock and Mystify the peasantry. Combined with the awe of church buildings, a serious impact must have been experienced.
Lovely singing and writing Cat.

As Neil says...
...just imagine hearing this in a lovely, reverberant cathedral in medieval times...

One doesn't need to understand Latin to feel uplifted or to feel some awe...

And then of course in the modern world one can experience uplift and awe just hearing it through headphones...

I find myself wondering...
...in my post-commenting way, whether you are familiar with either The Tallis Scholars or with Anonymous 4...

You're undoubtedly wider-listened than I am in this area of music, but if you haven't sought these two out, they're worth it...

mega great
this style of singing always seems so spiritual to me. some take away religious feelings from such an experience as this, but since i'm not religious in any formal sense, all i can take away is this: it's as huge as the sky at night.

absolutely fabulous singing!

thanks

Very...
...nicely "improvised." It all makes complete sense and the overdubbing of your "voices" is just beautiful. Palestrina would be proud. It is so nice to hear just unaccompanied voices -- a real breath of fresh air. How nice it is to be hearing more and more people here working on and enjoying these ancient forms that are so much a basis of our contemporary music. Brava to you!!!
(P.S. Don't be worried about the Latin. -- It's actually ancient Greek anyway.... and you pronounced it all perfectly.)
Peace.

Forget the highs...
Who knew you had that lower register? You'd think that after more than two years of listening to your music that I'd know you could sing over that kind of range, but you managed to surprise me, Mistress Kat.

How lovely, truly. (L)
