Description
This is my first collaboration, and the first new song I've written and recorded since joining MacJams.
About a week ago I found myself on Moviz's page, listening to his song "Something's Going On". I liked the song, and was very impressed with the lyric, which was from the heart. For some reason I just started messing about on the guitar with something similar to the opening guitar part of Maurice's original. Then, as if by magic, an hour later I'd worked it up into a full song - not something I was expecting to happen!
By next lunch time I'd put down a basic version in GB and posted it off to Maurice to seek his approval (something which in retrospect I should have asked him before the event but, hey-ho!). Thankfully he didn't sue me and agreed to work on the track instead, eventually adding some backing vocals.
This is very much an interpretation of Maurice's original song, and not really a cover version. I'd really like to thank Mo for all that he's done in helping me put this together - his critical ear has really helped me to improve the track (especially in the volume of the vocal - I would have left it much lower in the mix but Maurice encouraged me to push it up front - and he was right!!!)
Also, after a couple of months on MJ's I think this is a real step forward for me - both in songwriting and production. So thanks for everyone here whose influences I must have soaked up:-))
Still not perfect of course, but it's all part of the learning curve as I see it.
So, this is my version of Moviz's song - hope you enjoy,
Thanks,
Phil

Lyrics
Something's Going On
(by Phil Dolby ©2007)
(Original lyrics ©Maurice Vizard - "Moviz" - 2007)
What's going on with the world? People warring
Something's wrong with the world, nerves are jarring
They say that God's on their side, so why the killing?
If God is really on their side, then why are they so willing?
When people try to live their lives and strive for happiness
Try to make their dreams come true when something's gone amiss
Why take away what God has made and fill the world with hate?
Can they ever, come together
Or is it too late?
(chorus)
Is this what God really wants?
People at war?
If this is what God really wants
I don't want to know
I just don't want to know...
Something's changed in the world, Evil's thriving
Someone's brainwashed the world, but I ain't buyin'
Send out our love to the world, people need it
Show them we care for the world, and make them heed it
And why a God with so much love would destroy what's so pure and good
He wouldn't want the men of the world to spill any more of their blood
Maybe peace will come to the world, but it's up to us to sow it
Could we ever? Now or never?
How can we know it?
(chorus)
Is this what God really wants?
People at war?
If this is what God really wants, then
I don't want to know
I just don't want to know...
I look about this wonderful earth, and all it's beauty
Flowing rivers, and forests and so, don't you think it's our duty?
To protect and to love and respect, and best of all to share it
To be proud of all that we survey and somehow to try to care for it
Cos I know that when I leave this earth, I will say with all of my heart
"This was my home
And a place that
I shared with love
For everyone"
(chorus)
Is this what God really wants?
People at war?
If this is what God really wants, then
I don't want to know
I just don't want to know
I just don't want to know
I just don't want to know

Excellent song and a fine interpretation.
Nice understated production, loved the pedal steel. Is that you playing?
Simple and direct.
Cheers
