Lyrics
Life of Luxury

Dig a ditch, fill it up, Drink your tea, wash the cup
I’ve had my share of life mundane
I never want to work againnnnnnnn ooooooooo.

Give me a life of luxury one that has no pain
Where the sun will always shine and it never has to rain
I want to ride in a limousine and never take the train
Give me a life of luxury one that has no shame.

Give me a life of luxury where I can have the best
Women turn at my every glance and I don’t take a test
They come at me with loving eyes and I into their nests
I’ll take a life of luxury and you can have the rest

Ooooooo there are plenty of people you know
Who run away to the circus only to find a freak show.

Make me the head of a corporation where I don’t have to work
A seaside condominium to satisfy my quirks
Hide me away from the working class, the homeless and their smirks
Give me a life of luxury gratuities and perks.

Ooooooo there are plenty of people you know
Who run away to the circus only to find a freak show.

Give me a life of luxury one without regret
No guilt or forced compassion no tears that make me wet.
Where there is no obligation to those I’ve never met.
Give me a life of luxury and you can have what’s left (repeat)

Once again and -
as I have said before, your music sounds very English or being Welsh should I say British ? - whatever. The song is very catchy and well arranged with all it's parts fitting together as they should. Particular mention must be made to the vocal harmonys which give it a beautiful lift. Being a self confessed doo wop fan of many years I love to hear these. Nice clear sound as well, -love the end bit, very unexpected !!!

John.

Can't Help it
My pop and rock sensibilities lie in the UK. I'll keep working on my harmonies.

Thanks for the kind remarks. I have to give some credit to the MOTU Ultralite Interface that helps with recording, but also mixing since I now can use my monitors properly.

Thanks, John for listening and commenting.

what a great tune! It takes me back to the 60's (sound-wise) in the best possible way. Toe tappin' fun here. TERRIFIC lyrics, and the vocal/instrument mix is great. This is a total keeper - thanks for the smile.

Nothing wrong with quirky, or kinky especially as it applies to music.

How About Davies?
Good to hear from you Vic. Thanks for popping by and giving a listen.

I think of this as more of a Kinks type song, but what the heck, I'll take a McCartney reference anytime. Unless its for a date with Heather.

Sunny afternoon!
Loved the brass. Very 60s and a wonderful laid back sound.

Pop as it should be :-)

Always glad to hear from you.

Thanks for stopping by giving a listen and a comment. The brass was done on my old Roland JW-50 Workstation with assistance from GB 3 plug-in.

Thanks again!

Years ago a friend of mine and I did a musical called "Duet." It was never produced, but a great learning experience in writing for particular situations.

Give me a drink with an umbrella!
This is the perfect song to play on the beach BEFORE that Waterloo Sunset cones down. Really a fine, fine tune - thanks for the download! BTW I've heard Ray Davies (pronounced "Davis," he says!) on a couple of radio shows (podcast, actually), he's got a new album out.

Yes, I think it is pronounced Davis, although spelled Davies. I love the reference to Waterloo Sunset, one of the best songs around.

Glad you came by and gave a listen. The ending was an attempt to show that even the Life of Luxury can get a little mundane after awhile. Plus it might wake the listener up.

the 'horns' are fine...
...I'm guessing you're meaning 'brass', apropos your forum post.....(via Caroline's comment-Cameron is an orchestral French Horn player)

Your 'horn' parts sound fine to me- (I'm a brass player-meaning, I've played with all sorts of ensembles, including jazz & rock)

They sound so good, I'd suggest using your 'horn' sounds at lesser intervals.....you get more effect with 'horns' with less usage- use them at your 'poignant' verses/choruses...I hope that makes sense!

Sorry if I 'sound 'confused, or 'horn-swaggled'! (*~*)

All The Best!
Cheers!

Alf

Ray Davies
...sweet, wistful song reminds me of the Kinks, with a hint of Travelling Willburys - a working bloke tune, drinking coffee from a lunch truck while on a ten-minute break from his muddy ditch-digging job, glances up and sees a Concorde sailing into the clouds.

I love the horns... I've played with the GarageBand horns before on some songs, and this has a wonderfully summery feel with the mix. Excellent job!

...and the Village Brass Band
Cute song. And the horns sound fine to me. About as well as you can do with software instruments.

groovy!
This definitely took me back to the 60s. The song was well-conceived and mixed, and you have an interesting, distinctive voice.

You created a "lazy" mood in this song which is effective.

Caroline pointed me here so I could check out the "horns", which is indeed BRASS rather than (French) horn.

I agree with alfalpha that brass should be used perhaps more sparingly than you did here, although I was impressed by the overall sound of these synthesized sounds. You write well for brass; the accompaniment lines and harmony would fit the instruments' capabilities nicely.

However, if I were to play one of these parts live, my chops would get tired as the notes were virtually non-stop, with very little rest.

It's hard to write for instruments that we might not play, ourselves.

I would suggest substituting saxes or maybe even vocals for the brass lines at times, alternating the sounds to create more variety and give the brass players (and the listeners' ears) a rest. ;-)

That being said, I did enjoy listening to this song. Good work!

"Brass" Comments
Thank your Alphalpha, Rik, Vic and Cameron for your "brass" comments. I was concerned that I perhaps used the brass too much. I'll go back and revisit that section.

As fate would have it I was listening to Ray Davies' new album, "Working Man's Cafe" and notice the horns on one of the songs. They were excellent, but used more as an emphasis than a connecting instrument. Vocalizing some of the parts was also a good idea, Cameron. Less is more!

The brass was an ensemble brass selection played on a Roland JW-50 Workstation into a MOTU Ultralite and I then used GB's "Live Horn Section" plug-in.

Thanks so much for all your comments.
