Description:
Another rough sketch of a song i started this week. I was suppose to be re-recording a few of my current songs, but ended up writing a new one altogether. Not overly excited about the verses on this one and will probably re write them at some point. Enjoy! Hardware:
The usual + My old Kirkman upright piano (instead of the software piano)Software:
Garageband 4 |

Mckenzie
thank you very much!
Feter
I like your singing ...the feel in this song just
awesome ...reminds me of John Gorka ..very decent
and so true ..the piano and the guitar work so wonderful
it need an accordion from the back or a harmonica ..!!!
very authnetic my friend ..thnx alot for sharin !!!
Mckenzie
i actually considered having an accordian in there somewhere, but ended up deciding against it. Maybe when i re-record it back to it i'll have a re think about it. Thanks for the input!
SatelliteTragedy
this is pretty damn amazing. you have a great voice and use it very very well. love the sparse arrangement. I don't think you should do too much more to this. I like it as is. Incredible.
Mckenzie
I got a comment from THE Satellite Tragedy!!!! haha (sorry - big fan here)
Seriously though thanks for the comment,I agree, i think i was very close to over doing this one with pads and synths and choirs etc, so i had to hold back a little, and hopefully achieved the right sound.
Thanks for stopping by!

wicked! i dig the verses. but if you think you can better it, by all means. really dig the guitar and piano interaction in the choruses. outstanding!
i like the heavy delay action on the vocals in the choruses. one thing you might want to try, if the delay effect has a low pass filter (ie. a high-cut) try taking some top end off, maybe down as low as 5khz. i donnow... it might sound better the way you have it. just an idea.
Mckenzie
cheers for the advice! I always look at all those crazy filters and hi-pass cutters in the garageband drop-down and never know what they mean or do, so i leave them alone (eq and compression is about as technical as i get at the moment) but i will definately go back and do what you just said and see what i think. Vocal production and mastering is something i need to investigate further!
cheers again!

I have no criticisms... other than I could write and sing that well! But that's not your fault, now is it :).
Lennon714
OBVIOUSLY I mean "I wish I could write and sing this well".
You're probably like, "Who the F*** is this guy!?"
Mckenzie
hahahahahahahahahhha oh got i'm laughing so hard right now!!
guygrooves
12parsecs pimped this in the forum, and I know why know. This is amazing. The only thing I would pick at is, the "righ igh igh igh ight" part Everything else is of the highest quality. I am a fan!! Great writing, production, singing, and playing.

Mckenzie
thanks guy, i completely agree, it sounds pretty dreadful, i just couldn't be bothered to redo the take (lazy teenager), and figured i'll just get rid of it when i come to doing a more polished version. But i'm glad you liked it, Thanks for the comment!
:)
rsorensen
while i respect that opinion, i have to say FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY DON'T TOUCH THAT PART! it's one of the highlights of the song for me and is by no means dreadful. Little improvs like that are totally honest and make your vocal performance all the more gripping. I vote keep it in.
ledebutant
I agree with Ridd on this one. You have a spectacular voice and I think your classical singing background serves you incredibly well when you're moving around in your range (which rules, by the way), but I can hear at times that style of singing sneaking slightly into your vocals here, mostly in your ennunciation and your being right on top of the beat and the improv there is nice and loose and exactly what you need in the song. I have a lot of issues with singing loosely, myself, definitely, so I really have very little business saying much of anything about this.
I've been listening to a lot of your songs the last few weeks and I think you're an incredible writer and musician. I see you're studying music, which is great. If this is what you want to do with your life, please don't let anyone stop you. You are the real thing, kid, and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise.
Mckenzie
thats why i love this place, the encouragement given by people who all share the same passion is amazing. Music IS what i want to do, and i'd love to maybe one-day make a living from it (whether through teaching, writing or even performing) but i have a LONG LONG way to go yet. I'm spending this year getting a portfolio of half decent songs that i can use in my University audition (i'm hoping to study commercial music) and so this place is ideal for me to test run the demo's so to speak on other musicians. Thanks for being such a supportive fan - it really is appreciated

Man, I really like your stuff. you've got a real talent for putting sounds together and writing great tunes. This is killer. Love the acoustic piano sound mixed with the guitar and atmospheric synth stuff. Great vocals. My only suggestion - which is really just that, a suggestion - maybe try some harmonies on the vocals. But sooo not really needed. Awesome.
Mckenzie
because after i uploaded this i thought i could really work with some harmonies in their.. we'll see...maybe on the updated version
very pleased to here you like my stuff!
CHEERS!
lavalamp
Great vocal delivery. Love the simplicity of the piano and guitar. They mesh very nicely.
Cold Play-ish.
I shall pimp this!

I'm extremely influenced by Coldplay (one of my all time favorite bands), so for you to mention them in the same breath as me is a major compliment! Nice of you to pick up on the guitar and piano too, i wanted to use our acoustic upright as oppose to the software piano i usually use.
Thanks for the kind words!
Mz
EZamor
what can i say? this is some fine work. it's as simple as that.

The only nits I hear have already been mentioned - the "righ igh igh igh ight" is a screamer, but to me everything else sounds amazingly well recorded. Can I suggest tidying up the intro and outro silences - easy to do and would add some polish for that Uni audition.
Congratulations for micing the acoustic piano so well too!
If I was involved in the audition for Uni for you I'd be doing all I could to get you through.
A really solid post.
Neil
Sweet song. I really enjoyed the listen.

This is some professional (sounding) stuff.

vocals- it doesn't sound like you are copying someone else's style.I don't know much about recording but you've got talent and soul!

This is another great song you've written here. I have been waiting for a new song from you. I really like your vox. I would like to hear some drums kick in later in the song. Still, great as is.
kingbee
Sounds fantastic.
Great mix and great song.
Very moving and powerful

A few bad decisions (the "righ .. igh .. igh" has been mentioned enough), but a fantastic performance and recording.
Those falsetto notes are so beautifully right!
Amazing sound from the Kirkmann.
Moviz
others say, this is really brilliant and I wouldn't touch a thing. You do have a great voice and the ability to use it too, combined with a great musical and song writing talent, lovely stuff, regards M
Rebsie
Wow, this is really excellent. Fine songwriting and an immaculate balance of instrumentation. It's good that you're not afraid to leave some space between the notes and allow the song to breathe, and the little synthy sweeps are excellent to fill in some of those spaces. Your vocals are lovely ... heartfelt and full of expression. What a terrific falsetto you have there! Keep at it, you have REAL talent.
Char
Nice melody. Really very good. It was nice to have found this tonight. You have a fan. Thanks.
digitalnirvana9
You are a very talented fellow....Like most really good music this song is very unique but in a familiar, archetypal way. I expect that we will hear more great music coming from you and if you want it, I think a career in music could be yours. I'm now off to see what else you have done...Peace, Norman
digitalnirvana9
I hope in the future that you will post your lyrics. I know that YOU know what they are, but it will help us to better understand the song from a holistic level and will make for better feedback from the listener. After listening a couple of more times I feel that you are a natural and given your age it would be best to take full advantage of the wealth of talent on this site.....Peace and god luck, Norman

got the young sound here which I would think this should be played on every pop radio station in the land. This is sensational current pop radio quality stuff.
Blown away by your talent to produce, record, sing and arrange very high quality stuff.
Like has been said, boy do you sure know how to throw your voice high. What a great blessing it is to be able to do that musically wise.
I could go on and on. But this is one of the best pop type songs I've heard here at MJ!
WAY TO GO !
Mckenzie

You certainly have a knack for a good chorus. Well done all around though. Sounds great!
