Description:
I couldn’t find a “Psychedelic Gospel” category (what a scandal!), so I’m forced to dub this one Art Rock. Ha ha...

This is a simple---albeit deeply personal---song of gratitude.

Warning...Beware verse three!

Be well all!

Lyrics:
SUMMER OF YOUR LOVE

I.
In the summer of Your love,
when I was just nineteen;
You came into my life...
You came and You set me free.

You shined a holy light,
into the deep, dark, cold inside;
and with no hiding places left,
You saved me from myself.

II.
In the summer of Your love,
I became grateful.
You breathed upon my heart,
a desire to be faithful.

Before the worlds were made;
Your plan already laid.
I would never have chosen You Lord,
if left to myself.

III.
With nothing of value to trade;
my heart and hands were empty!
The dawning of Your grace,
remains a mystery;
born of eternity
...Lord.

IV.
In the winter of my lifetime,
Your summer sun’s still shining.
Heaven’s smile, it beckons now.
Soon I will with you be dining.

No fears and no regrets,
will stifle these tears of joy.
Jesus, You are my God!
I’m Yours for evermore...

You got some good lyrics here. I know I can't really write them and sing them since I'm bad with that area (As you can see I have mostly instrumental pieces). I'm not really sure of the synth in the background works. Your second half though was pretty awesome with the drums just coming in and the guitar solo was pretty sweet. I look forward to your future works for sure. Keep it up! :D

It's good to finally connect with you man. I'll be checking out your stuff soon.

Glad you enjoyed the tune.

different approach from you on this one, but a great song filled with sincerity. I love the combination of synths /guitars especially when i recovered my hearing after verse three LOL ( I know, I know you warned us LOL). Great though when the lead breaks in there.... I do think though that the vocal could come up a smidgin all through the song. Great lyrics too, cheers M

Ha! I'm glad you've recovered your hearing. My own ears took some heavy blows during the mixing process...but I think I've managed to bounce back.

You're probably right about the volume on the vox. Especially in the middle.

I appreciate the nice comment my friend. Thanks for listening.

really cool synths, nice warbly guitar, really great chord progression. all building up to BAM!

god, I love that overcompressed drum sound, it's such a cool effect. really brave compression on the whole chorus, actually. props, it's almost perfectly done too!

Thanks Joachim! &mdash 08/21/08 - 11:14:31 AM
Glad you enjoyed the tune.

RE the drums: Actually, I used very little compression. The effect is the result of using compression, EQ-ing, and a Spreader.

Thanks for the nice comment friend!

Be well!

But what a heck this is so good I can hear it again my friend.
Nice mixing as well.

I appreciate the kind words my friend.

I don't know if you noticed, but this is a newer mix than the one at iComp. I tweaked the drums a little more in places on this one.

Believe it or not Micheal, this might be my favorites of yours. Very original blends of music. Sounds quite authentic. Great dynamics.

Wow David! &mdash 08/21/08 - 11:21:45 AM
That's quite a compliment my friend. Many thanks!

Usually I plug my guitars into the computer and record. I did that with the warbly guitar, but all the leads were done through a microphone and amplifier. I think that's where the better dynamics come in...especially on the guitars.

So glad you enjoyed this!

Be well!

I envy the conviction. Honestly, I love your voice. This is song of praise and gratitude. And, it is very good. Thank you for sharing.
I doubt it is the winter of your lifetime, though.

Glad you find the singing palatable.

RE "winter": I've always regard senior citizenship as the ONSET of winter in life's seasons. I became a senior citizen this year. I've got a head covered with snow as further documentation! Ha ha...

Winter can be short or long...bitter cold or relatively mild. I'm hoping for long and mild. But not my will, HIS will be done.

Be well dear friend!

When I came up with this chord progression I thought, "Gee, maybe I can write a piece for Feter's Summer of Love challenge." Then I couldn't shake those words outta my mind and they became the song! I was gonna submit this to the challenge, but you out-drew me and asked me before I could do it.

You knew the "rockin' steam" was coming because we're BOTH Jethro Tull fans and that's just the kind of things THEY would do in a song like this. They do something similar in Jack-a-Lyn for example.

So glad you enjoyed it my friend!

Be well!

Style &mdash 08/20/08 - 09:19:45 PM
Quite a different vocal style as well as guitar. Sounds really good, but to get a really psychedelic feel see if you can get some slow panning to get the whole sound spinning. On the other hand that might be disorienting on head phones, apply cheap '60s panning tricks at your own risk LOL

Thanks
Bill

Thank you Bill! &mdash 08/21/08 - 11:46:50 AM
Yes...the vocal style is not my usual, but it's what the song required. I came close to this style in "Thinking."

I do believe there is a slight bit of panning on the flanged strings. I try to use panning effects judiciously these days. I've overdone them in the past. Growing up in the 60's somewhat warped my mind I think. Ha ha...

In an earlier mix I flanged my vox resulting in some panning. On the headphones it made my feel like I was on a Merry-Go-Round. It was too much so I dropped the flange.

Glad you enjoyed the tune my friend!

Be well!

G n' R &mdash 08/20/08 - 11:49:39 PM
Really like this one when it lets loose. Really cool ideas in this and well executed. Not sure if many will get this reference but it sounds like something axl rose wouldve written in his prime. cool song.

Re your G n R comparison, I really couldn't say. I've never heard them. Although I know they were considered among the greats, so I'm genuinely flattered.

I haven't listened to the radio since the late 70's, when I became disgusted with the whole music industry. I've only kept up with a few of the older bands. I do listen to some newer music, that I heard about through the grapevine, but not much.

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

the flanging really works to add an etherial mood

i love the harmonium sounds - music of the spheres perhaps?

III. really screams and with good purpose -- thoughtful lyrics

(evermore seems to have an Irish lilt to it?! "God is good, but never dance in a small boat")

many thanks

Thanks Bill! &mdash 08/21/08 - 03:48:04 PM
Flanging always adds a hint of psychedelia, doesn't it?

RE the "harmonium sounds": Originally I tried to do these parts as a cello, but it sounded so fake I had to give the idea up. The sounds I settled on are from a "Revo 9 Light" (or something like that) synth setting in Logic Express. And you are dead-on my friend! I WAS going for a "music of the spheres" effect here.

RE the "lilt": I listen to way too much celtic rock...It's starting to affect my vocals!

Thanks gain for listening and commenting Bill!

I'm really digging the Sea of Love progression/melody in the first line of each verse. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're lifting it, but hopefully you get what I mean. I love how this track goes unexpected places, and then back again - which is just as unexpected. Great job!

As I said in my response to Ridd's comment above, I stopped listening to the radio around 1979, so I'm not up on the vast majority of newer music. I've never heard of "Sea Of Love." Is it a band, or just the name of a song? I'm intrigued!

Anyway, I appreciate the nice comment my friend. I'm glad you hopped aboard for the ride!

No Tim. I tried to get Uri Geller to help me out with some of the effects, but to no avail. I had to rely on some weird synth settings instead.

Hey! Thanks for the KC comparison. I've always loved those guys; especially from 1969-1974. They were (and still are) brilliant.

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

Glad you enjoyed it my friend. Thanks for the on-going musical inspiration.

Connections &mdash 08/21/08 - 11:09:36 PM
That what this song is all about, making a personal connection with God. Excellent lyrics Micheal, and very well sung. I agree with Maurice about the vox coming up a little in the mix though.

I like what you had to say and the way you said it very much my friend. Thank you for sharing this one, it needed to be heard.

Took a break.... &mdash 08/22/08 - 01:29:35 AM
Stopped in drank this one up with delight!!! Man you have some cool musical ideas. I get what Ridd is sayin about GNR. I also get what you say about being disgusted with the music scene ha ha. Me too. Have you thought of internet radio or satellite radio? You can find some really cool music that remains relatively untouched by the business. With satellite and internet there is the possibility to find "modern" music outside of MJ's. Not easy, but it can be done there are still plenty of artists out there with original ideas, this place proves that in spades.
I digress ha ha....this is amongst those original ideas, and Axle Rose wouldn't have been able to write something as good as this, even in his prime. ( sorry Ridd ) People will always say something like "this reminds me of...." but it's all subjective, and based on what kind of music they listen to. This is a great song Mike. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Guy
P.S. Almost done ;o)

RE radio: satellite and internet radio involve a time commitment that I'm no longer able to make. I prefer hearing about new groups through the grapevine. Whenever I do, I usually check them out on Amazon.com via the reviews. I discovered Los Lobos, The Bottle Rockets, Cary Hudson, Cheri Knight, and the (now defunct) Blood Oranges and Blue Mountain that way. Several other groups as well...I don't spend much money on music anymore, and listen to a mere handful of bands. Occasionally I break out the old stuff, but there's just no time. Most of what I listen to beyond a handful of professional groups is my fellow MJers. I think that's a GOOD thing!

Glad you enjoyed the tune Guy. I think you might have been overly generous to me in the comparison with Mr. Rose. I'm told he was quite gifted musically (albeit a bit of an ass socially).

Nevertheless, it's always good to hear from you my friend (as you know well by now).

Take care!

Great Tunes & Vocal &mdash 08/23/08 - 07:42:39 AM
Hi Micheal

Lyrics is very good. And a great vocal as usual.

Around 2 min. it beginn to be very interesting with the instruments 'exploding'. Though I miss you would have continued the rest of the song in that manner.

Your choise it's still a very good song. keep up the good work.

good melody &mdash 08/24/08 - 09:27:02 AM
And the humble lyrics suits the mood in your production.

I see you wanted a Psychedelic Gospel category, and the fx's you use would match that:)

If I could choose... I would like to hear this song without them though. 'Cause I think your guitar playing and singing are good and would sound brilliant being served natural. The feedbacks and fx on the guitar gets in the way of my focus on your music.

The powerful break when the drums comes thundering in - very tasteful. And that guitar solo... wow, full of energy and so are your vocals in this part:)

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks all! &mdash 08/24/08 - 02:08:28 PM
I have appreciated all the feedback I've received on this little experiment in "psychedelic Gospel"...

Folks seem somewhat divided over the psychedelic effects. A song like this could have been done any number of ways I suppose.

Indeed, if I had the time, I would probably do an alternate version with acoustic picking, hammond organ, and an extended heavy mid-section; but I have so many projects in development that it's not likely I'll ever get to it!

However, I DO agree with the complaint of several listeners that the volume on the vocals needs to be raised throughout, and I've done so on the Master. This has pushed the psychedelic effects a little further into the background and made them less distracting. GOOD CALL!

Again, I deeply appreciate ALL of the positive and negative feedback I've gotten. I really didn't expect this piece to get as much attention as it did. Shows what little I know! Ha ha...

Be well my friends!

Great stuff &mdash 08/25/08 - 06:32:21 AM
I love psychedelic sounds, as you probably know by now. This is really good, Micheal. Gorgeous guitars and your voice sounds very sweet on those softer verses. You've done a great job of this all round. No complaints from me.

I'm all too familiar with the problem of finding a genre that fits! But I always reckon it's a positive sign if you're doing music which is impossible to fit into an existing pigeon-hole. :)

Excellent &mdash 08/25/08 - 05:00:55 PM
There absolutely should be a category called 'Psychedelic Gospel'! And this would be the benchmark. A unique and original musical approach to the lyrics, and very nicely done. Love the guitar sounds, both in the verse, and in the lead, and mind-blowing drum sound! Perfect. Nice vocal performance, too, and lyrics very nicely done. I really like the discordant guitar notes hovering over some of the lines. The synth sound is pretty good, but a little brassy for my taste. But this is a minor nit in an avalanche of brilliance! Very impressive, my friend. Sorry it took me so long to get here! Peace.

Sorry I'm so late Mike &mdash 08/31/08 - 01:36:26 AM
I like this, although I can't really relate to the lyrics as you know.

Musically, I'd like to hear the vocals a fair bit louder in the mix in both parts of the song. The bending metal that Tim mentioned is quite eerie.

Good post.
