Description
Experiment(al) , decided to look at the positive side of my technical/memory handy cap, and let anything go! :) Going out in new territory, I chose 3/4 , D minor 80, and picked out my favorite loops. I found it to be very fun and much more stimulating :) I hope you enjoy my unusual arrangement. Thanks for listening:)*

I like
your unusual choices of instruments, here. They are like a riot of many different kinds of flowers - A wild beauty when viewed from afar, but each one has its own singular beauty when you get up close, too. I like the Irish flute you used for the ending!

D minor ...
of course, is the saddest of all keys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5dnVlbKgoM&feature=related

but this didn't seem sad at all. It's rather joyous actually. Very well done.
Morning Light said 387 days ago (October 18th, 2008)
REALLY?.......
I AM FACINATED! I DON'T HAVE ANY UNDERSTANDING OF KEYS OR CHORDS....I HAVE A SUPER MENTAL BLOCK ABOUT THEM, BUT NOW I WISH I DIDN'T.......I AM VERY CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE SAID, AND WHAT MAKES THAT SO....THANKS FOR LISTENING! :)

No, not really.
Hi ML (Linda). That was just a joke. In general, songs centered on a minor key sound more serious, sometimes sad. Major keys are happier. The link I sent you was from the movie "This Is Spinal Tap," which is a fake documentary about a rock band. The clip shows the lead guitarist of Spinal Tap in a "serious" moment, composing a song with a sadder, more serious feel than his usual stuff, and he claims that D Minor is the saddest of all keys. The joke is that D Minor is no sadder than any minor key. It's all relative, of course. You could simply shift all the notes in your song up to F minor, and the emotional content would be identical. The guitarist/pianist is again being exposed for his superficiality.

Keys are chosen either to match the range of a vocalist or to make it easier for certain instruments involved in the song. Many rock and blues tunes are written in E or A, so that the open E and A strings can be used easily by rock guitarists. But Chuck Berry (as I recall) wrote his blues/rock tunes in C sharp, to match his vocal range better. Another example: C Major and A minor are easiest for keyboards, because you use only the white keys.

As to WHY this major/minor effect works, I don't know. But human physiological and psychological response to music must certainly be a fascinating subject, just as you say.

The only reason I mentioned this, besides trying to be a little funny, is that your tune does not sound sad, so it is an exception to the "rule."

Perhaps
some explanation?

The difference between a minor and a major chord is just _not only_ one halftone less for the first terz. It is more. And you are absolutely right by saying that d- minor is one of kind sadness. I think it is a warm sadness, more melancholic. Why? If you think about your keyboard, an d-minor is the same key as an c sharp. d(b) = c(#)
But that's only on keyboard.. In fact they should be slightly different. Johann Sebastian Bach has written a great piano work: the well temperatured piano (Das wohltemperierte Klavier)
His tuning of a piano is a compromis (as every piano tuning is) and that gives different colour of chords: For example...
C Major ist majestic proud and friendly, D Major is more flying lightly, not so rock stable and it sounds easy. And d-minor is mild and warm and melancholic. c minor i.e. is more desperate, harder, colder. That all is a lot of taste, find your descriptions for yourself, I think it is very interesting.

Greetings,

Bernd

BTW:

Nice experimental music. That is the right way to do it.
