Description:
A re-mix of a previous post; In this mix, I attempted to remove the clips I had, and tried to add a little more ambiance to the overall sound. This is one of my favorites that my brother John plays on for me, because it reflects his great talent on the guitar and his love for music. He took a rag-tag experimental effort of mine and truly made music of it, Thanks John.An experiment with household objects. I'm playing the cuica, Sears gas grill, Rubbermaid trashcan with Dead-blow hammer, and the 1¼" combination wrench with the ½" drive break-over bar. My brother John (TEXASFEEL) graciously added the guitars to top it off.... Thanks, bro! Enjoy the taste of Brasil! |

yeah those are some killer guitars. very smooth, I love the originality of the percussion too.
Well done!

Thanks Marshall - check out some of John's stuff on his page, http://www.macjams.com/artist/TEXASFEEL

Esp love the fact that some of the sounds are household items. Well done, this is brilliant, really enjoyed. Brilliant guitaring as well.
Rocha Malhada
Thanks Keith, glad you enjoyed the track.

bud
even better now. Worth the revisit for sure.
Rocha Malhada
Thanks for revisiting this. I had re-loaded Cubase after going months without it when I bought a new laptop, and opened this project - I didn't realize how much clipping I had left in it before and some of the panning was strange(?), so I took another stab at it... Glad you approve.

This one cool tune dudes! Sweet little piece gents.
I heard the first version long ago, but this is so much more refined.
BTW: I'd be having a taste of steak on that grill! lol
Thanks for sharing.
Rocha Malhada
Thanks for re-visiting Chris.
Would you like that medium rare? :)

HenriROGERsoloandbands
Sounds more Spain to me than Brasil :-)
Never mind, great sounds and mood with a cool guitar and nice rythms .
Rocha Malhada
Thanks for listening and commenting, Henri
I guess it reminds me of so much of the music I heard while growing up in Brasil for 18 years, that I made that association. My bad.
. - Harold
five_extra_arms
Harold and John,
this could've been a funny tune, but it was really authentic Brasil!! I love that you experimented the way that you did. The foundation of guitar gave you tons of room for exploration. The percussion reminds me of Depeche Mode "Construction Time" era noises, only not sampled and not synthetic.
So, what did you guys throw on the grill after that tasty jam? I can smell it from here.
Bob
Rocha Malhada
Come on down, Bob - the fire's still burning, I think it's about done now. :-|
Thanks for the nice comments.

SO COOL! what a great combo of creative sounds and that silky guitar over the top. awesome. just brilliant.
Rocha Malhada
Thanks Shay, what a nice description of John's guitar work. thank you for listening and commenting!

Studioplayer
Rubbermaid trashcan with Dead-blow hammer!! LOL That's great. Creative stuff. It actually has a nice thump to it.
Rocha Malhada
Thanks David - I tried all kinds of EQ and such to make it sound more like a bass drum, but it ain't happening. The plastic ridged bottom gives about a "thud", and that's it
Thanks for listening and commenting.
. - Harold
Very nice. Your recording nice and clear. I need to change my software, and learn a bit more. Very cool song Diggin it.
Rocha Malhada
Thank you Anthony. If I could just sing as well as you do....

of you, must look around the house to see what i over looked. Definitely got that samba vibe to it, and that guitar sounds it off rather well. Glad i found this, i went to college with a guy that made a c.d from house hold objects.
Rocha Malhada
Really is amazing what you can find, especially in the order of drone. I had thought about adding my battery powered hand drill, makes a cool sound when you power on & off...
. - Harold
VicDiesel
this doesn't sound all that Brazilian. Samba has a very characteristic rhythm.
Your rhythm section is pretty cool. I think the DIY approach is in the spirit of the everybody-join-in notion of the Brazilian carnival.
The guitars are cool, but not really latin american....
Rocha Malhada
Interesting.... I was born and lived there 18 years. A lot of influences in "their" music, perhaps I'm guilty of association. Samba is probably the wrong genre; me beating on the gas grill doesn't emulate the percussion executed in the traditional samba schools for certain
I would recommend "Fanfarra" and some other tunes off the "Brasileiro" album by Sergio Mendes...

If you are into 'found sounds' perhaps you have discovered the timbre clarity of metric wrenches over standard toolage.... let me know what you think. : )
I have always wanted to get a mic up to a squeaky wheelbarrow wheel- the ones with the metal tub.... it has an odd reverb quality. The results of an idle childhood
Rocha Malhada
I haven't compared the UOM effect, but what does count is the size and quality/weight of the combo wrench. Pipe and crescent wrenches suck due to the damping effect of the assembled parts. The other critical aspect is how you hang the wrench - a thin leather chord works well....
:-) hope this helps.
Thanks for the listen and your comments.

what more can be said? Great combination of sounds.

Thanks smokey, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping in to listen and comment.

Love the idea of the household items/tools as instruments and the guitars are outstanding. This came out great. How about a whole album like this?
Rocha Malhada
hmm.. I wore my hands out beating on that grill.
Gee Dave, did you bring everyone over with ya? Thanks man.
. - Harold

Hands down this is the most creative percussive based track I've heard on Macjams. Brilliant and very close to pure genius.
John's playing only gets better and better. I've always felt he's one of the most under-rated players here and a master of any style he chooses.
Very cool song, Harold!
Adam
Rocha Malhada
Thanks Adam - that's pretty high praise...
I agree about John, he is a master on the guitar, one of the best on this site.

Fihing Line.. or monofilament as they say in the movie biz... works well in the hanging of open or boxed wrenches... why do we know such things?
Rocha Malhada
I'll bet that would work even better than leather.
thanks,
. - Harold

I've always wanted to work with percussionist with a drummers sensibilities or a drummer with a percussionist sensibilities. Drummers generally play on the beat and percussionist off the beat. I've always wanted a something in-between. I would always say " Look I don't care if you play a cereal box as long as you've got a groove"
I want a percussionist like you.
Rocha Malhada
Thanks, Miche - I guess I'm niether, so I must qualify :-|
I guess I should practice up a bit and build the calluses on my thumbs and palms, sheesh that grill top tore me up, and I was sore for days...
. - Harold
Jarvoid
Thats the best bit of rubbish I have heard in a long time....well rubbishbin anyway, oh okay you call it a trashcan. I say tomato you say tomato.......it doesn,t work when it's written down does it?
Cracking good idea, do you play real drums as well?
I just stumbled along here after reading one of your posts ,got side tracked to this tune and forgot what the post was .....bo***x.
All the Best Jarvoid
Rocha Malhada
It's! even different in Texas twang...
I don't play drums, I just used my thumbs and palms to beat the gas grill, hammer on the rubbish bin, etc...
Thanks Chris. Hope the visit revealed more about the author of the post... :-|

The guitar work on this is tremendous! With the originality of the percussion I think this is awesome. Great playing. Glad I stopped by!!
Rocha Malhada
Glad you stopped by, too - I'm over listening to "Free Yourself (Revised)" right now, great song

Dj French Toast
I love making music with non trad stuff . This sounds real good . What is the noise that sounds like a frog in it ? Great guitar and general feel . I think it was a little short was just gettin into it when it ended but thats your call....great song:)
Rocha Malhada
that "noise" is the Cuíca, a Brazilian instrument (the little red drum looking thing sittin on the right side of the grill). It has a stick in it tied into the calf skin head that you rub on with a moist rag... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cu%C3%ADca
Thanks for dropping in man..
. - Harold
Youra
Great rythm section ! A great peace, never heard the original, and it doesn't appear in you song list. Guitars and funny gear mix perfectly in this samba laid back feel. Well done.
Rocha Malhada
Youra, thanks for the listen and comment...
