Description:
So I posted this song a long time ago as a straight acoustic song, and then recently I have found out that the girl I wrote it about was doing pretty badly. I remembered I had written a song about her and thought I would ask a couple of fellow MJers to re-interpret it for me. Vic Holman posted an excellent power pop version, and now JIm Bouchard has done a lovely ballad with it. Jim did everything on this take, all I can claim is the acoustic guitar and vox. It has been great to see what these 2 talents can do with one of my pieces when left alone to tinker for a bit. For comparisons sake: Vics Version: http://www.macjams.com/song/47763 The original: http://www.macjams.com/song/44272 Lyrics:
but everybody knowsyou've been out with him there's a little girl at home but you dropped out of school so you could work at night Chorus: you're life isn't going how you thought it would i hope that you don't make the same mistakes i did it's time to figure out exactly what to do with you and Stella too your boy is finally home a mustache on his face so you kicked him to the curb you got lots of bills to pay childcare ain't cheap what you gonna do? Chorus: you're life isn't going how you thought it would i hope that you don't make the same mistakes i did it's time to figure out exactly what to do with you and Stella too what's your angle? are you looking for attention? you're not stupid but i'm beginning to wonder it's time to figure out exactly what to do about Stella too |

Jim continues to amaze me with his "tinkering". Everything is rich and full, separated and mixed to perfection. Each performance adding to the track as a whole without getting in the way.

The ballad approach works! The musical setting, tempo, rhythms: all set the tone around the melancholy lyrics.
Thanks

how cool. I like Jim's approach on this.
it has a rolling stones "sweet lady jane" approach that really fits the mood.
excellent work guys!

Quite amazed by the songwriting and vocal performance in this song. Everything about this song strikes me as being sincere and heartfelt and for some reason this is one of those very few songs where I find myself just listening, enjoying the song, without even thinking about how you got that warm background sound (wonderful job, Jim!) and how well everything blends. Reminds my of Joshua Radin's style, but truly, if I listened to radio at all, this is the kind of music I'd like to hear!

i loved the original of this one and the additions in this one are great. makes for a really big, rich sound. nice job jim (and, of course, michael).
like the break down in the latter verse. only thing i think it could use again, at some point, were some of those killer harmonies that were in the original?
again, great job you two!

And a production job that is up there with the best of them - IMHO!
There is s certain Beatles flavour to the song (chord progression etc), but the production here reminds me of something Jon Brion might do, maybe with Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann - I think it's the organ sound and the rolling feel of the drums. This is just so far up my alley it deserves a permanent place on the CD shelf - really top drawer!
Super, smashing, great!

Beautiful. Warm and rich sounds. Heartfelt songwriting and vocals. A wonderful tune.

jeesh just goes to show how far a good song can travel...this arrangement is great too - but have to say that what makes these multiple remakes great are the vocals and the lyrics - the song would sound terrific a capella, so no matter how you mix it or recreate it you can't lose with those vox.

Lovely song for someone who really needs to be lifted up. Great arrangement Jim with some very soft easy feeling about it.
I love this track, Thank you for me and for her.
