Description
This song ended up being on the second "album" from Polly PUt the Kettle On. It was actually much older than the release date (2001 I think??). I had worked with multiple versions for a couple years before getting it nearly how I wanted it. When I started the song I guess it was really inspired by the vocal a/b overlay by simon and garfunkel on one of their songs. I think it was scarborough fair. After hearing that a few times it ended up influencing me to write something that also had an overlay/interplay of lyrics and vocals. After writing the song and recording it, I decided I wanted a female vocalist. I had my sister try it, but wasn't happy with the result. I had a girl from school try it also, but again was not happy. Both these vocalists tried to handle the song with too much vibrato, not the clear/clean pop style and I didn't feel it was right for the intended effect. A couple of years later I ended up working with a vocalist named Julie Van Horn and we collaborated on two of the songs on Contagion. I think she did a phenomenal job and I intend to post both of these two songs here on MacJams.

Most of Contagion was recorded over a two week period. I actually had just experienced some emotional tumult in my life, and I locked myself in my basement for a month or so and completed the writing and the re-recording of several ideas. As the last few ideas came together and the recording was finishing up I had come out of my shell and met Julie. She had instant promise and I was able to include her in the work immediately.

Spending two weeks literally locked in my basement gave this song "cell" a new meaning for me. The lyrics were older but they came alive at that time and were very fitting.

I hope you like it.

Lyrics
calling your will to slip away
burning my hand in killing pain
can't you give it time to forget
what a price for your lonely heart cell

wading in time lost with every stride
searching the dust i've borne inside

toll of loss is stronger | dreaming here in my cell lost
now stronger now | the way of the open door
that you are gone | light is gone from my life
| piercing chain of those
| frequent lies

press of days is longer now | hold to none of the
longer now | signs crime out of
that you are gone | fear pours all out
| over time anger now is
| undead out of pain
| conceived in your head

Well this turned out beautifully - so killer emotive. Love when the guitar comes in at about 2/3 - fabulous transition there. Excellent song!

This
did turn out great. The ending seems to fade too abruptly. The vocals and melody of this piece are lovely. Nice guitar work. Thanks for sharing!

hmmm
I hadn't thought of that. Endings are always hard for me. I don't like the "fade out" approach used on a lot of recordings, because I try to go for a live sound and something that would work on stage. I hate to have a song with no real ending and if it gets played live you just kind of STOP somewhere. So I always try to create something that is really doable. I'll have to think about this one more if/when I rework it. Thanks for coming by!

Ending
It really is a small nit, but I should clarify. I don't mean a "fade out" ending. It is just that toward the end the guitar strums were all being sustained, then the last one seems to be cut short. I think just let it sustain for maybe 8 beats and then give it one last 1 beat strum or just let the original strum fade itself out. Does that make more sense? Anyway, I am just one voice, so if you like it and others like it the way it is, then that is the way it should be.

Oh yeah that does make more sense
I wouldn't intentionally cut off audio, or cut short some of the "cadence" of the instrument. It's possible I missed it or even more possible that I cut it off because there was some undesirable artifact. My early recordings on tascam were "primitive" because I had to bounce tracks around from one bad hissy tape track to another sometimes. I also had poor headphones and got some bleed and some issues with analog drift of the click track or rough drum tempo track on the tape track. These issues were generally more apparent at the beginning or end of a song. I've gotten better but I still fight with issues like this. You know as well as I how many hours can be put into tracking something yourself and trying to do a professional job at every level. It's tough! Your comment is totally appropriate and I bet most of the others would agree if they were to think about it. I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

Beautiful song
and I really enjoyed both of your vocal performances - superb. Lovely guitar/bass work too. It is refreshing to hear real drums too. I would like to be able to do that but am hindered by the practicalities of it (plus I can't play them).
Cheers
Len

Missed this
I got kind of jammed up for awhile. The real drums on this are such a poor example... I doubt you could find worse drums. You'd almost have better luck with 5 gallon buckets. But I am not trying to lessen your comment, I guess I am not being gracious. I am just glad that somebody hears it and is pleased by it! Shocking!!! Thanks.

love this one too
I have to agree - Julie's voice is perfect for this. As Karen said - killer emotive. Great guitar work. Maybe you should lock yourself in the basement more often! Although I'm certainly not wishing any more emotional tumult for you. Music can be such a mixed blessing - a therapeutic form of release but then also a reminder of pain and confusion. Or maybe you listen to this and say "Thank god I'm not back in that place - look how far I've come!" oh anyway, i'm musing as I'm listening.

Times are not as they were, which is mostly good. Looking back on work like this doesn't have much effect on me either way I guess. You might think it would take me back but it doesn't really. I had worked on this song for about 5 years before it came to this point. Work that spans so much time like that gets kind of blurred in that sense, it isn't pinned down to any particular set of events or emotions except the ones intrinsic in the work itself. At least for me... But not all the work I've done has spanned such time. Some has happened over the course of a lucky afternoon. Thanks for the musing thoughts.
