Description:
A song to my daughter Stella as she fills out her college applications. This time next year she will be somewhere else. I started this a little while ago and set it aside. I just added some guitar leads and tweaked the drums - now it's time...
The picture is of Stella at Burning Man this summer.

Lyrics:
At once complete And still becoming
Surely certain
Barely tested
Direct line
From heart to head
Nothing in the Way
Nothing in the way
Glowing beaming
Beauty blessed
Loved and loving
All embracing
Hungry restless
Tired happy
Nothing in the way
Nothing in the way
Here today
An ocean crossing
Sea of choices
Deeper deeper
Fine weather
For a voyage
Nothing in the way

Thanks for the backstory on this - it's so happy/sad that she's preparing to leave home for college. With that in mind, hearing this song was especially meaningful and your repeat of "nothing in the way" very effective. Cool song all around - good luck with the empty nest!
bud
The nest won't be completely empty - my son Dylan is 14. But I'll miss my girl - that's for sure.

It's a weird and wonderful feeling at the same time, watching the fledglings leaving the nest. Your lyrics are superb, really exploring and prying open that set of contradictory feelings and impulses. I like the percussion on this a lot, and love the vocal - very Ian Curtis. Great sound overall, and lovely guitar sound and playing on this. Very cool. Good luck to your daughter on her new adventure. She has a cool dad - that has to be a good start! Nicely done. Peace.
bud
for your kind words. I'm always happy to get the Ian Curtis comparison when I hear myself as a Holiday Inn lounge crooner. Much appreciated. Stella's a great person - I'm very excited for her.

Kevin,
Cool tune. i like how open it is. Lots of space---hey! like nothing in the way! How apropos. Anyway, a sweet tribute to your little bird who is set to fly away. Hey if you trust her enough to send her to Burning Man, she must have a good head on her shoulders. Oh dude, I am so jealous, she has all those College BAND days ahead of her, how awesome!

we all went together - the Beck/Jones Experience summer vacation 2008. We had a great time - there's a little slide show on my launch page. I wish I could do college again. Like a fool I dropped out after one year. For some reason I was eager to enter the work force. Ha! Thanks for dropping by with your kind comments.

I sure like how this is layered. the single guitar line underlining it is pretty cool.
the tune itself conveys a sense of loss, which I assume that is what you intended after all. kid's sure grow up fast.
it seems like a long time to hear the solo Bud Band play.
bud
cooked one up solo. I wish I had your skills though - this sounds a bit muddy to me. I generally like mud - but I'd like this to be cleaner. Wanna remix?
LunaTrick
I really like your voice... sort of Luxuria, Swans, LPD ish! Sing more my friend.
Nice composition... I like the rhythm and your use of space. Best wishes to your daughter... what a great send off!
bud
I appreciate the kind words - always struggling with the vocals. I pass a word on to Stella.
Relic67
kind of an expansive, spacious feel.
sort of reminded me of one of hendrix's more meditative tunes... although the vocal part is a bit more modern sounding of course.
anyway, it's good! nice playing on the danelectro... I was just admiring some of their cool-looking twangers at the local guitar emporium... best of luck to your daughter.
bud
best crappy guitar out there - and nice action too. Hendrix? You gotta be kidding. Thanks.

I've been through this too, my daughter is 23 now. While not being able to write such a beautiful song to express my feelings. Loved the guitar parts and moved by the lyrics. Good luck to Stella !
bud
at this point. Best to you both.

sounds like a bit of melancholy in your playing mate, shows you are a decent chap, i would be very proud if i were Stella to have a gifted old man. I did not even get a wave when i split. Once again a fine track, with your trade mark bass sounds sorted. Slightly reminiscent of Neil Young in places. Cheers.
bud
thanks for the listen and kind words.

...lyric, Bud. You have captured the wonder and the anguish. A very poignant number. "Nothing in the way..." is a very good place to be. Let her fly!!!
Peace.

nor would I want to get in the way - Stella's a fine person who's brought a lot of richness to my life. I'm very lucky, and grateful.

some doubts about this for some reason. Three emails with no song present and then this.
I have no doubt that this is my definite favourite of yours. Agonising.
Love the melancholic feel (drums are superb) and performance.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers

I posted once and then took it down to tweak - but when I tried to re-post, twice it put up the old file and not the new.
Very glad you approve of this so strongly - and nice of you to say so.

Same to you. Download "love songs" as my little gift - Emma closes the album beautifully. macjams.com/artist/mjAlbumPods

song really affected me- my daughter is going to college next year too.Today is her 18th birthday.I am a weird mixture of excited, worried, sad and happy. Thanks for the great song!
bud
Stella turned 18 on Thanksgiving this year. It's an interesting moment when you realize that the bulk of your work is done - now it's more about support and understanding. Where is she thinking of going? Stella is all over the map from Hampshire to Reed in Portland - and St. John's in Santa Fe.

what the hell! the drums in this are outstanding. love that bass sound too. killer tune man. love what you did with the layered vocals. and again, the drums! awesome
bud
I wrote this initially with a very basic analog drum machine track in an eighties synth band style. The I added some lead guitar and the mix sounded wrong so I stripped the drums off and started over and decided to use DOD off beat and odd time loops which were in 7 and stuff and had to be tweaked to work on what is basically a 4/4 tune. The result allowed me to play with shifting accents and what sorta sonunds more live and reactive than usual. Glad you like it - it's definitle something I'll try again.
Layered vocals are all about low self esteem. lol.
egobandit
such cohesion between the lyrics and music all the way to the last note as it fades out Excellent!
bud
Your girl will be here someday - before you know it.
TERRAPLANE
I really enjoy the guitar texture here BUD,,Awesome arrangement !! I heard it was another great year at Burning Man,,
where's Stella's goggles? My daughter is home for the Holidays ,,,maybe Stella will make it home next year.
bud
we were all there together mom, dad, sister, brother - first time. We all had our goggles on Saturday - it was intense.
Stella's not at college yet - not till the fall. Enjoy having you daughter home.
guitapick
...Stella appreciates what a cool dude her father really is...
...so moving, Kevin...we'll give all of us to the ones we love...as they sail away onto that never ending voyage
bud
That's right Bob - you can be sure of that. Thanks for stopping by.

Man Kev, i cant keep up with your output! The vocal here is pure Ian Curtis, but dreamier - this is a swirling swoon of a track, lovely but with razors at the edge.
Great backstory - you must be proud (and vice versa - what a cool dad)

Vocal kudos from you mean a lot to me.

Great song Bud. Mine's just 14 now. You given the most important travel gift: love. May heaven smile on your efforts.

I swore I commented on this ......hmmmm well I think it really brings me to the sadness of letting your child drift into the great unknown and be her own person . Its a feeling I havent even come close to yet but im sure itll make stronger sense some day !
