Description:
A few weeks ago I asked Luna Trick if he would be into doing a collab with him on cello and me on Theremin. Nice guy that he is, he said yes (even after I told him that I couldn't play the Theremin like an actual instrument). He sent me a cello improv that he did and I started to mess around with it in Logic. I made it a bit longer and then manipulated it a bit. I used a spectral gate and delay for most of it. Kind of reminds me of Jimmy Page now. I added my Theremin track and messed with the EQ and a gate on that as well (also delay, I love delay). This is generally the type of thing I like to hear in a soundtrack. The picture is of a young Leo Theremin playing a theremin.
Anyways here is what I came up. Now I wonder if we can talk Mystified into singing one of her madrigals over the top. Hope you like this Lunatrick.

sounds like something from a suspense thriller!

glad you like. I had some fun with this one. Luna's playing is what makes this good.

Interesting collab to be sure - and I must admit - your Theremin is unique. Oddly coincidental - I watched the documentary on Leo Theremin on the flight over to San Diego recently. What did you use to emulate the Theremin - or is it a real Theremin? I have an Alesis AirFX that does a good job of it.
Daniel's Cello sounds great and your production is really cool on this - I like the little artifacts that come and go.

i actually used a real Theremin on this one, but ran it through a couple of things (mostly delay and a spectral gate). The artifacts are me tapping the antenna of the theremin on a second track. I hadn't played the thing in sooo long that I have no intonation anymore; basically felt pretty self conscious about it, so I manipulated the hell out of it. when I first got it, I would sit on the couch with headphones plugged into it, and play along to whatever was on TV; got pretty good at it, but that was years ago. should have seen the dust on it when I pulled it out. thanks for listening.

beautiful ...and powerful ...this is crazy just to think of how
this all gathered ! ... I dunno whats the theremin ..but all
this turn into a very moving spheric music ...jee I would guess
this can go further with Cat's mew ...wish to ...thnx alot for
sharin !!!

i'm not really sure how a theremin works, but basically its a box with an antenna on it. when you put your hand next to it, it makes a sound kind of like a sine wave. the closer you get to the antenna, the higher the pitch. it's the first electronic instrument that was ever made. you've heard it in the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" (only played a lot better). My wife gave it to me for xmas years ago. Thanks so much for listening.

you should check out the documentary of the theremins inventor. it's called Theremin. really interesting and sad. He was definitely an innovator. Thanks for you kind words, Luna Trick really made this nice, otherwise it would have been another M2 sound piece.

It is both flattering and gratifying to be a part of this unique piece. I love what you did with the cello line... which gives it sonic qualities without destroying the string and wood resonance of the cello. This takes great skill... as bowed stringed instruments are often destroyed with effects. The theremin additions are absolutely perfect too.... you have opened my eyes to many new possibilities!

so glad you liked. for the effects on the cello, i copied the track onto 3 tracks. one of them i left pretty much dry (just EQed it and added a dash of reverb), one track has all of the spectral and delay stuff, and there is another track that I ran through reverb and a ring mod. that cello sounds so nice, I didn't want to bury it at all. you did an outstanding job with the vague description that I gave you originally. thanks for joining in. i was thinking JImmy Page meets Sigur Ros on this one BTW.
Vic Holman
very nicely effected.
you don't see theremins for sale all that often, anymore. It's pretty cool that you pick one up when you did. You should use it more often. I always dug the sound those things created.

glad you liked. i had been wanting a theremin for awhile and my wife searched around on ebay and found it. it was pretty cheap too (ike $100), as it's new and doesn't have the volume antenna (only pitch). i used to use it live quite a bit, always got a good response from the crowd when I'd pull it out.

i LOVE this. incredible sound. the cello is amazing and i love all the creepy atmosphere you've added with the theremin (now i want one). i would buy a soundtrack full of this. seriously, thanks for the download. i'm finding this very inspirational

glad you liked. figured this one isn't everybody's cup of tea, and glad that some (like you) find it appealing. Lunatrick is really great on cello, and he really did a nice job.

my favorite is the little mouse that sqeeks by . Enjoyed this one alot! thanks!

Great sound on the cello and nice spacial use of reverb and delay. Gotta love those theremin vibes...I once saw a theremin concert (near Edgbaston Daniel) where there was a small chamber orchestra and a very skilled theremin player simply pulling notes out of thin air.
This has a great Tuxedomoon vibe to it
I am sure Mysti would be very into helping with some vox here...all ya gotta do is ask...
:-)
Happy New Year folks....

I got Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds DVD for Christmas, and just watched it before I came to this. Just love the sound the theramin makes, and the combination with LT's cello is very cool indeed.
Brian would be proud!

it very much!
It seems that the theremin and the cello were made to complement each other...
There is a perfect harmony between them ( I am not speaking musically but on an emotional level).
Very good collab!

I keep hearing crickets out there. This is spectacularly different for a cello piece - I hear that Page thing, musta been using a bow.

Thanks for this; it has a suave feel and ambience.

well produced piece of music. Very evocative soundscape, which I like. When a song grabs you and takes you in... as a listener... you enjoy the ride completely. I did.

weird and wonderful, the two "W" words that I would expect to come from the minds of Michael and Daniel. The cello piece is great, but definitely gets the ethereal treatment with your sound effects... so do you have a real theremin, or is this a software imposter? Were you really waving your hands around to get the sounds? Whatever you did, my ears were in good hands :-)

This is one of those songs that make me feel like I'm dying of music. Does that make any sense?
The cello is gorgeous! I'm only now learning of the many talents of lunatrick...
I'm jealous you have a Theremin, but mostly just glad to listen!
kristyjo
I love how the cello is effected, yet still, very much a cello, played by a human. The theremin is such a cool instrument. Now, I know what I want for next Christmas. Excellent collab. Kinda sad. No, really sad.

before this post I thought a theremin was some kind of squirrel. now after googling i'm totally impressed - for one, that you even knew what this was, two, that you own it, and three, that you play it. Although now thinking about it this seems like something that is right down your alley.
Also, the cello and theremin combination seems really natural. Very "Russian Revolution" and so considering my newly learned history of the theremin very appropriate!

There is now a version of this with vocals by Andreas (Dirigent)

I am in love with the cello and this is just a magnificent piece. The great tones of the instrument are here as well as the spooky thrills of the theremin. You guys have made an absolutely wonderful colab.
Thanks,

This is so bad ass ! Downloaded and loved : )

it sounds as a beautiful thought slowly drifts into insanity. the cello attempts to stay the course. however, the strains of electronics are too much. it is swallowed in its own harmonics. a piece that provokes much thought. it is very well performed. 0x0
the theremin sometimes sounds like an electric guitar. This is nice, it would be great to have someone sing a madrigal on top of the track. Mystfield! You're needed.

I have never heard of a Theremin, Leo or otherwise. Very suspenseful and exciting. I could listen longer. Thanks.

This really sounds like a great soundtrack theme - the cello sounds beautiful, and the production on this is faultless. Totally unique, this is a stunning piece of work.
Whatever happened to Max???

Not much more to say than that. Great piece of work.

this is a great choice of instruments to combine
