Description

This song has been a challenge for me. I think I have over-analyzed it to the point that I don't know what sounds good anymore, so any constructive criticism is welcomed so I can go back and finish a master I can be happy with - or maybe it's good now and my ears are just too worn out to know any better! Heck - one look at the title should tell you I have working on this one for awhile!

Autumn In October
Four months - that's about how long it takes me - so that seems about right to me! I know what you mean about "worn out ears" and having it start to be hard to evaluate your own stuff after hearing it a million times. For what it's worth to you, this flows wonderfully to MY ears, which have heard it only once. I love your piano in here (but I'm biased for that sound), and as usual your instrumentation has nice breaks, changes, and keeps my interest from start to finish. The speaking voices that come in in the background are a really cool idea and made me smile just for the creativity of it. The acoustic guitar sound adds a very nice texture in here that makes this piece feel especially accessible to me. I really admire your top notch work and always feel excited to see that you've posted a new gift for MJ. Thanks!

And when I put a new piece out
one of the things I look forward to most is your critique - you are always so articulate and most kind! Your thoughts truly give me inspiration! But I will tell you that 4 months is a bit long for me and I think that is why this one is bugging me - I was going to upload it last night, but after listening to it I ended up remixing it - twice! I listened again today and finally said ENOUGH! It is what it is! Thank you so much for your thoughts - I really do appreciate them!

Well....
It sounds pretty darned good to me too, and my bar is already set pretty high since it is you :-) So, here are the things that bugged me: The drums used in this really did not seem to go, the rock set just seemed out of place, especially when it first came in over the breathy synth. I'd go more for a soft jazzy brush set, maybe switch to the big drums when you get to the rock section. I don't know about the warble-affected-voices, they're interesting, but maybe TOO interesting, definitely distracted me as I tried to hear what they were saying instead of listening to the music, they "pulled me out" of the zone. That's the negative. The positive is that the music, melodies, and instrumentation are really pretty, soothing and driving at the same time. Nice!

I must admit
the drums don't seem quite right to me either - they have definitely been part of my frustration - I just might play around with them a bit - I definitely appreciate your insight there. The voices - you know I did that for fun and could not convince myself afterwards to remove them - but what do they have to do with the song - nothing! I think this piece could be alot better so you will probably see this one get re-released some time in the future! Thanks for stoppin' by I appreciate your thoughts!

there s good balance tracks I am listenin to now ...maybe when the fuzz came in

so
first of all, i love the opening airy feel and the tambourine. great strings and synths. I think I say this every time you post a song, but I really love the movement in your pieces. You have a great sense of pacing and an incredible ability to create a real feel of forward motion while also leaving lots of space for things to breathe and give that airy feel. If that makes any sense! Love the combo of electric and acoustic guitars. I really enjoyed the ambient sounds and I think you did a great job of mixing them in so that they really felt like a part of the soundscape. Although the drums didn't bother me, I wonder what some ethnic percussion would sound like instead? Anyway, great stuff as usual. I SO look forward to your uploads, so thanks for sharing these!

Big sounds
Nice piece, and it sounds pretty good in general.

You're trying to go for something big, but somehow it's not coming out all that big. I would probably double lots of instruments. For instance, that guitar could be doubled by a piano, maybe with something strings in the sustain. The strings should not be played by a single strings sound, you should play individual parts. That immediately makes it sound bigger. More instruments to fill up the background, rather than using big sounds. You have the right idea with that tambourine; take it further: push the drums further back and add congas or something.

That's my thought.

Your comments are right on
I had to think about what you said for a bit, but you are right - I missed my target on this piece. I don't know if I would characterize it as big, but it was something. Doubling the guitar with another instrument - that was actually something I originally intended to do but the idea never reached fruition. The strings really are 3 different tracks but don't sound like it (but in my defense I am still learning how to use symphony instruments effectively)
