Description

For this event, I decided to go back through a bunch of songs that I recorded back in '04. Some had been posted back then (I took them down a long time ago thinking I would redo them) and some had not been posted. It's interesting to go back through the older songs. A lot of them I don't even remember doing.

I really had no clue about mastering songs back then, so I have learned quite a bit during the past years.

Early in 2004 I had just bought a house and a E-Mac and was thrilled that there was recording software (Garageband 1) included. So between painting and remodeling the house and recording two songs a week, I had stumbled upon Mac Jams while looking for free drum loops. I didn't know that there where music sites like this.

I deciding to totally redo this one from the bottom up. The original of this song had a simpler picking pattern it the verse parts. I end up expanding on that. The chorus I added additional chords. But the overall chord progression and feel stayed pretty much like the original.

The instrumental break is very different. Plus, I bought a e-bow while recording this and added some parts throughout with it. Most notably on the break and the beginning and end of the choruses.

Lastly, I decided to do all new lyrics as well.

So after close to five years the song finally gets posted.

Love this, Vic!
Gorgeous melody and lovely vocal - soft and intense, and the guitars create beautiful harmonies with it. I always love your stuff but this one has a special beauty to it. Glad you got it finished in the end.

It's hard to imagine there was ever a time when you weren't an expert mixer and masterer, but it looks like we came to this in a similar way ... I remember the swirl in my stomach when I dragged my new Mac over the front doorstep in 2004 and saw the GarageBand 1 logo on the box and thought ... "oooh, I wonder if that does what I think it does?" It did.

Very good production and mastering on this. Clean tracks great vocal, what's not to love on this one. I also like your treatment of the subject matter. You treat it as something that could happen without ridicule or malice. That's a good thing in my mind.

man just perfect in every way. great mix - guitars are nice and crunchy but don't dominate, drums and bass carry things but don't get in the way, vox like usual sit lightly on top of everything - everything that i've come to expect from a vic holman post except the playing here is just so standout i've got to tell you about it, i mean it's really super and along with that the lyrics are witty and descriptive and imaginative but also poignant. You and Micheal2 are ambassadors to the stars. If there are aliens out there (and no doubt there are) hopefully they find you guys first.

This is sweet. You really made it worth the wait! Brilliant guitar on this throughout. Love the combination of acoustic and electric. Perfectly balanced and sweetly complementing each other. ....like candy from the pushers on the playground... "Here, kid,...first one's free..." Oddly enough, I just recently dug out my old EBow, too... eMacs and EBows, once so modern...now anchors for nostalgia...

I really like the vocal on this, and the dynamics of the recording. I've always thought your recordings have had neat WIDTH, but this one's got air and depth and space to it...

funny thing is I never did use any of the loops.
My eMac is now just a glorified stereo.
I've been wanting a ebow for years. Usually guitar center in town didn't have them. I was about to order online, but thought I would give them a call. They actually had a few in stock this time. I have been having tons of fun with the new ebow. even can be switched to playing just the harmonics without the root note. too cool.

... that you are in fact David Bowie! This is fantastic man, I've been very remiss in keeping up with what people are posting and as the months go by the standard constantly amazes me. This, however, this is something special. It wouldn't be out of place on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album. The guitar solo into the classical picking is is a cracker! Great work.

My mind was funneled out through space...
there I came face to face. (Always loved that line of yours - loved the whole song "Without The Sun") Klaatu - Five Extra Arms (does that make seven? Very advantageous in this fast paced world. : ) ) - and an image I got of the old movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" - we exist, so how could anyone deny that we are not alone in the universe. Maybe when we learn to "Love Our Neighbors As Ourselves" the rest of the sentient beings in the universe will come invite us to join them. : ) Here's to world peace and global understanding. : )
