Lyrics
Maybe This Time
Words and Music, John Whitehead

Maybe this time
I’ll unlock the combination
Maybe this time
Will have been worth all the waitin’

Maybe this time
I’ll finish in the money
Maybe this time
The comb with fill with honey

Been staring down my demons
Who’ll be the first to blink
I got my foot upon the pedal
I could use some time to think

On a fault line
The ground beneath us shakin’
I’m thinking back on
All the roads not takin’

Its gonna be fine
I can almost taste it
Could be lucky break
Now, I don’t want to waste it

Gonna find out baby
If this thing can really fly
Get the wheels up off the ground
Point the nose up to the sky

What’ll happen when the paint starts showing cracks.
When we’ve learned each other’s lines and memorized the act,
When the blush is off the rose and the storm clouds roll in?

Maybe this time
I’ll have learned my lesson
Maybe this time
Saint Jude will send a blessin’

Maybe this time
We can go the distance
Maybe this time
We’ll have built up our resistance

Drivin’ up the mountain
You can see them in the weeds
The ones who swerved and rolled it
You better watch your speed

You have been...
"Pimped" hope you don't mind. This song moved me, and was what I needed after a trying day. From your new fan. Forum thread, "This is why I love this place" under general discussion.

This is excellent. I think you played another song which i liked too. Excellent production techniques to go along with your musicianship and songwriting.

I'm working
...on the production side of things. Still a neophyte. But with this one I had an idea in my head what i wanted it to sound like. That helps. Thanks for the listen.

Feels like
I'm still trying to find my voice as a singer. This one felt like a good step in the direction, towards somethin' like my own style

Love
how you really make each instrument count. You've really made each member instrument of this song special. Like how you do that. And of course the singing and the lyrics really stand out ! Sweet to hear lyrics too !

Thanks for sharing, glad this tune was mentioned in the forum !

pimped
Glad guygrooves pimped you on the boards. I might have missed this. Well, I'm just starting out on what could turn out to be a trying day. So this is just as good a day opener as a day closer. Really crisp production, sparse and well balanced. The piano is just perfectly off time just a hair. The bass is luscious. Very inspiring. Welcome to MJ John.

this is a perfect example of how a song does not need all the production bells and whistles to sound great. your vocal style reminds me a bit of John Mayer. music and vocals are well played, heartfelt and genuine. I enjoyed listening - thanks for sharing this with us.

Clear voice of quiet expectation
Fab tune, clearly delivered, masterful performed. The bass and piano lines are kind of stiff and straight, not really adding to the movement of the piece, in my ears anyway, and don't have the humanity of the guitar(s). Also, your vocals are maybe a hair too loud in the mix, altho I totally dig your vocals. Very nice track.

Gracias
Thanks for your remarks. I agree with you about bass and piano lines being stiff. Problem is I don't play those instruments and it shows! Especially bass--I hear a really nice upright ala Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks." Just couldn't find the groove using GB's virtual jazz bass. Great feedback. Gonna try and find a real bass player.

Good Song
Very nicely done. It would have been easy to have over done this song with lots of instruments, but I like that you held back.

The sound of the bass is great. You may not like what you played, but I thought it sounded very good.

authentic, old-time folk sound.

Takes me back to the old coffeehouses, where I started.

Very nicely done, John. Welcome to MacJams. ;)

You know...
...when to say "when". Great track. I absolutely love your restraint. Something I'm very envious of. Way to let the song just be the song. I never had to look through the production to get to the heart of if. Simply enjoyed the heck out of it.
Peace,
Dave
P.S. thanks to guygrooves for the pimp

Nice
great country-folk offering.
You sing and play guitar really well.
I really like those single-note piano lines, used sparingly. which can be devastatingly effective a la Nick Drake's "Pink Moon". Also I actually like that upright bass sound, one of the better GB software instrument sounds in my opinion.
super post. Look forward to more.

sweet
this is, overall, sweet in ever sense of the word. lovely lyrics and song-writing. you have a soft, emotive voice that's just perfect for this acoustic folk feel. great guitar work and i really love the little bits of other instrumentation you throw in here and there. the bass is great and really keeps the song moving. this is a great song in both composition and performance. thanks for sharing this with us!

I love the lyrics
as well as the melody line and that repetitive chord groove. Production is a little 'lo-fi' sounding. Still, nice song and fine accompaniment. Did I mention that you have a very soothing voice? Just nicely fitted to the low-key style of the lyrics.

Wow.
I can consider the excellent source now. Amazing vocal performance - smooth and well mixed. I loved how the piano comes in adding that touch of warmth. Sometimes mixes (i.e. mine) can get overworked, so it's a real pleasure to hear a tune whose complexity lay not in its many layers, but in it's thorough musicianship. Every part is as well-measured as it is played. Awesome stuff, John.

Lots of vibe here. The arragement is wandering a little but it starts building in a meaningful way with "showing cracks". It's just me but I hear something, if you started building from the first you could have let the arrangement "crack" or wobble right there and it would have been effective? Sorry just Daug...
Elvis guitar player is here too, can you give me his number?
