Description

This mix is an attempt to capture my thoughts on what we would hear if stars could communicate across space and we could listen in on the transmissions.

The human-like dialogue/monologue is not meant to make sense and is the front portion of the whole soundscape, with strings being part of the backdrop.

Let me know your thoughts on the mix.

Hi Daniel........
I like your 'underwater dialogue'. Part of the problem with some Ambient mixes is that they fit in more than one environment, so you're thoughts are as valid as my own.

I'm shocked that someone has thought one of my mixes was low. I try to mix them down from a volume point of view so I'll have to have another listen myself and think what I might have done on this uploaded mix.

I do try to vary something or other in what would be generally stock R56-mixes. It helps if someone finds/hears the things that I do. It makes it all worth while.

As you spotted on another music upload site, I'm trying slightly different things, from my point of view, so stay tuned.

There's also a free album project that I'm frantically putting together this week. I'll post the download link/site when everything is in place. It'll be Ambient in content, as is in keeping with the hosting site.

Space is full.
You come up with so many interesting ideas around which to base your music. This idea is particuarly and uniquely clever. The use of high-pitched voices is a surprising choice, giving the stars an almost childlike aspect, as opposed to old and wise, which would have been the obvious, perhaps less thoughtful choice. The mix could have been a little hotter, maybe a little wider, but then, maybe not. The mix as is puts the conversants at a distance, but localized. So it depends on what you're going for. The spacey background music is perfect, suggesting permanence and continuity --- "ongoingness." Very nice.

Hi Ex.....
My thoughts on the communication protocol being more human than ancient/star-like is that communicating about children you use childhood concepts to converse, expecially if decribing something that someone else will receive third hand. The more simple the concept, the easier it is to understand and more so with a language focussed on the 'time' of the subjects, i.e. the idioms, etc., of the period, and if there was visuals as well as language, another intelligent being would have just about the full behavioural picture in its actual context. All the better to understand.

Thanks for the clarification, Paul. That makes perfect sense, and puts on a different spin from what I was thinking. Your ideas on the music are deeper than what you write in your description.(!) I humbly recommend that you include the story behind the music in your song descriptions. That way we can receive the "message" the way you intend it. Thanks again. Keep on with the space ambient. It's great.

I am not surprised...
...at your thoroughly personal and unique "take" on this conversation. If there is such a thing, this is just as good a recording of it as anyone could imagine. Your inventiveness continues to amaze me. I don't know how you think like this, but it always makes a lot of sense. And your personal commentaries are always enlightening, too. (I'm wondering if you've ever thought of writing science fiction...I just started the DUNE series and your soundscapes seem like they'd be the perfect backdrop for these imagined universes. (I like, too, the notion that you have given a VOICE to the stars in this comp, rather than just letting them float there in the void. Remarkable.

Hi Paul......
I am basically a dabbler. I put together a 6-/8-/10-track piece of music then I use instruments for each part but put them to playing another instrument's part, so what you then have is a multitrack piece of sound that maybe doesn't sound much like the original dots but has its own 'life'. (Some of the original notes play but some do not due to the characteristics of the instrument playing them). I then tweak the sounds to better fit the music whilst the main dynamics run contra (in some cases) to how a classic or instrument ensemble would play/interpret the piece.

This gives me an almost unique angle on any music, becuase even I don't know how the piece will end and from a basic chord sequence and rhythm I could finish with 15 definite pieces that may not bear any resemblance to others in the sequence even though the same arrangement of notes was used.

The flavour of the piece, i.e. classical or ambient is decided by me based on the soft synth sounds I use, as each one of these instruments has genre-specific features, to me anyway.

I write all sorts of stuff including sci-fi but again I'm a dabbler so nothing concrete comes of it except me getting something or other off of my chest by writing it down. I externalise the feeling or mood.

Good luck with Muad-Dib? and the Dune sequence. It's a fascinating read.
