Description
I thought I might be done with this one, but I was approached by "Kappy" and asked if he could play a banjo line for it. I said of course, not thinking much about it. A few days later John (Kappy) sent me a copy of what he had done. It sat on my desktop for a few weeks because I honestly didn't know how I would mix it with a banjo. I was certain that it wasn't something I wanted for the song......BOY WAS I WRONG!! I opened it up, loaded it with the latest version of the song featuring Michael House aka mhv9591 on keyboard strings and electric piano, as well as Chris Cihon aka PickQuickRecords on lead guitar, and a harmony guitar track I didn't use on the last one. I started to mix it minus Michael's piano line, worried that I wouldn't be able to find enough room for placing all the instruments in the mix. WRONG AGAIN!! I eventually wound up using all tracks sent to me in this version. There are 8 separate instruments and 3 vocal tracks. This is the largest mix I have worked on to date, and it wasn't easy to get it to this point, but I figured if I didn't post it soon I might not ever. I am my own worst critic and suffer from a pretty bad case of perfectionism. Please feel free to let me know how to improve it, the more ears the better. Thanks to all who listen.

works
I agree man Kappy's addition works, brings out a really cool vibe on this song. I think the banjo makes the vocal style even better, like a "Gentle On My Mind" type sound. Really places it and makes it "romantic" in that way. Love it.

No worries about it from here that's for sure. Kappy added a certain sparkle to the mix that brightens it up and adds the missing ingredient. all of you did a marvelous job on this, especially you Guy. Very nice mix man, congratulations.

OK....
here's what i like about this one versus other ones..... The banjo is just right in the mix. I felt on 'our' version that my guitar was overwhelming in the mix when you were singing, but the banjo fits better in the mix and sounds tasteful without overwhelming your vocals, plus the guitar solos on this were killer, they fit in right where they were supposed to. I especially liked the dual leads in various parts of the song, gave it a kind of allman bro's feel. Good stuff.

I really like our version too and your guitar was the "sheen" in that one in my opinion Henri really gave the rhythm section the anchor it needed and I dug your guitar lines so much I may have subconsciously moved it too far up in the mix but only because it was so good. Thanks so much for your time and thoughts.

What's left to say?
The banjo isn't an addition, it's the sheen, the final piece in the jigsaw puzzle. Like nearly everyone else I think this is not just a great MJ song but something that stands alongside the best classic commercial releases. The banjo sits in the mix like it always belonged there.
I'm a sucker for banjo in country rock. This is now my definitive version of "The One" and will take its place on my iPod to soothe me on sad evenings.
I salute you!

Dead on Mate...
You couldn't be more accurate with that comment. I am very happy with how it came out. Thanks for the listen and comment. You should try to find a copy of "Sweet city woman" by the Stampeders which is in my opinion the crown jewel of country rock with a banjo.

Hi Guy!
I agree with the above the banjo adds sheen and I love the sound of this one.

On my first listen something sounded out of sync in the very start but after two more listens it has clicked in. It was probably my ears that were messed up!

Great job Guy! Gosh the vocals on this are superb!

You have good ears....
There is... the banjo starts a beat late and I couldn't really fix it, and the acoustic goes out of time a couple times throughout the song. I wish I had re recorded it before I posted this and if I find a bass player I will. Thanks for your time Mark

Guy
The individual tracks sound fantastically well recorded, and you have a lot of life in the mix of this very nice song. It gets better and better as it moves on - a really nice country rock feel going on.

As far as improvements go, the only nits I would pick are: the acoustic guitar in the RH channel in the first minute or so (it comes back towards the end) - the one playing off the beat - seems to throw the rhythm out pretty badly. I'd suggest a much straighter strum on that. Only other area which seems lacking is the bass - I'm listening on pretty good 'phones and can't really make it out at all. For me (I grew up playing this sort of thing) there's a driving bass line just screaming out for a chance to move this along.

Great song, great recording (except for the bass). Singing, drums and guitar are all excellent. Banjo works for me too. Your production skills have come a long way since that first song of yours I heard.

Cheers,
N

I am so happy you made it by, it means a lot to me, as I know how busy you are. You are a huge part of how far I have come with production. You were very kind with your direction and advice in the beginning (as well as lately) but those early days you gave me some strong direction and I am grateful to say the least.
I am going to re record the acoustic, and wish I had done it before posting this one, but I think there is one more in me, and maybe next year I'll have a version with a real bass line and an on time acoustic guitar. Thanks for your time mate and take care of yourself.

nicely done
some good country rockin going on here. banjo is a great addition, and those guitar parts are great. reminds me of the time i spent in Florida listening to the Allmans, Marshall Tucker, etc... my one nitpick is the same as Jiguma: the one accoustic is a little off time in parts, and takes away from the driving feel. but you are 99% of the way there on this one. take with a grain of salt as i use all first takes (including mixes). that makes me SO not the person to be dispensing advice. great track.

the one
yeah this is musical high cotton. i've said before (i think) that this tune makes me want to crank up the stereo, roll down the windows, and head down I-40, and this version even more so. banjo is really cool but it's the structure and vox that make this tune what it is. you only need one hit when this is "the one" lol.

The One
I like the addition of the banjo, it adds a nice element to an already awesome tune. To my ears its a little hot and up front compared to some of the other instruments like the accordion and strings, maybe a little more volume from them will help even it out. I agree with Jiguma on the bass, it really is hard to hear. Beside that, I'm impressed once again, and THANK YOU for letting me perform on this. I had a lot of fun recording the tracks. Extremely professional sounding. Impressive.

Thanks again.

Chris

Hey Chris
I had another listen last night and I hear it now and agree. I actually tried to hide my crappy playing in both the acoustic and bass and I guess it only worked with the bass. Goes to show you the people you like to hear from the most are the ones likely to call you out on the weakness of any given piece. The Bass has finally been farmed out to a real bass player and I am gonna re record the acoustic. I always do better when I play with musicians that can actually keep time (never has been my strong suit lol) When those are done and in the mix I think the Banjo won't stand out as much, we'll see I guess. Thank you for your support and contribution I am truly honored you took the time. I think this last version will be everything I hoped the song could be.

Okay
Right then Guy, lets get to it. I honestly feel that this song is a MacJams classic. No shit - this could be a big hit - it has a great tune, a great feel and an emotional depth. And it stays with you and makes you want to listen again - and I'm saying all this about a genre which isn't really 'my thing,' but hey - even I know quality when I see it!

So, that said, lets really get inside this thing (and please remember to put that big capital lettered 'IMHO' after all the following comments:-)))

1) The first ten seconds could be better. It's a bit out of time and the acoustic sounds clumsy. Then that bass coming in doesn't really work (IMHO)!

2) Again, throughout the first verse there are issues with timing - but with the strummed guitar, and also the picked banjo (which is a sweet sound, but is not tight enough with the rhythm guitar). Also, especially in the first verse you seem to want to get too many words into the vocal and it sounds like you're playing catch up - check out the "lonely days to pass" line for what I mean.

3) The middle guitar section with the big strings is brilliant!

4) I'm not sure that the banjo needs to be there all the time - in the end sections I can hear it plucking away but I'm not sure it needs to be. Perhaps the old adage that less is more might be the case with the banjo here!

Anyway - these are minor gripes - but if you really want to whip this into uber-classic status then I would spend a bit of time down at the coal face grappling with some of the nitty-gritty of timing and arrangement.

You are very kind Phil, I appreciate the time you took with this, and I was aware of all those issues, except what you said about the banjo. I have a real bass player who wants a go at this and I am in the process of re recording the acoustic, so I am really glad to know I am on the right track. I will work with what you said about the banjo and see what comes out. Thanks again bro.
