Description

I had no idea where this song was going until I got about half way through. It was actually supposed to be an electric version of an all acoustic song I've been playing for years but it took on a mind of its own and is hardly recognizable anymore. A good thing in this case.

The lyrics are a reflection of my long distance situation with my wife and kids this year. Yeah, another song about my girls.

	U2-ish I was listening to some Coldplay the day I wrote this one - not too far off. U2 is another influence as well. As far as the backing vocals at the end go I just had to write a song using la-la-la's. Almost out of character for me. I'm happy with the finished piece though. At about 3:30 when it goes into the extended vamp, that's when it really started to flow for me. Pensive and sorrowful. Was it an organ that comes in? O.K. Strings. Nice. The backing vox, the open ride cymbal. You may be missing your girls, but it certainly has given you time to play and man you are putting it to good use. You are just cranking them out! D/L'd and fav'd.

Yeah that spot is where it usually kicks in for me too. That's the Fitch Cello and some Hollywood strings I think. It's hard to use those without sounding too fake. I meant for the backing vocals to be a little higher pitched and upfront but ended up with what you hear.
I've definitely had time to write lately and I forgot that I could actually do it when I tried. Just a warning - no music from me next year when the family's all in the same house again :)

I depend on my family so much for stability. Can't imagine being away from them for long periods so often.
Amazing song. Reminds me of something from Nada Surf's 'The Weight Is a Gift', one of my favorite albums.
Your voice keeps getting better with every song and I can definitely hear that you mean what you're singing. This is one of your best vocal performances imo. This one moved me.. No easy task :)

Yeah, it's been a crazy year but we're making it work. My girls 3rd birthday is Friday. I haven't heard "The Weight is a Gift" but "The Proximity Effect" is one of my favs. I'm far less concerned about letting others here my voice than I used to be. I'm glad it sounded good and that I had the chance to move someone:) I've got some new songs in the works and I think I can make them work also.

Oh and thanks for the forum pimp. I logged in and thought, damn - where did all these hits come from?

	perfect pic The road is exactly what I'm seeing while listening to this jam. Very full instrumentation. I think the chorus could use an accompanying voice with it (maybe a females?). Rod Stewart
The guitars remind me of the guitar parts on "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart, from around 1971.

Your voice sounds like a cross between Christopher Cross and Don Henley.

A very enjoyable track. The lyrics are well-crafted and heartfelt. Love the backup vocals too.

Your photo of your computer music studio is really terrific. Makes me want to clean up my act and make my studio look presentable too!

Well-mixed and nicely recorded. This is obviously not your first recording project. No one sounds this good without a whole lot of experience, in music and computers.

Your Snowball mic sounds very good. I bought one when they first came out, and could not get it to work, so I returned it. But you seem to know what to do to make it work, and it works great on this track.

Great comments John. I have no complaints being compared to some of the names you mentioned. I don't have much experience, Nov 06 was the first time I tried recording in Garageband. I did use multitrack cassette recorders before that.
The snowball mic is a little difficult to get just right. I tend to max it out very easily. Getting better though.
