Description
OK, so I have a hard drive full of unfinished....'things', and part of me says, "Go ahead and finish one. You'll feel better".
I hope that's true. It's sort of an SJ'd "One of These Days" for you Meddle-heads out there.

The orchestral strings sounds in Logic Pro only seem to include ensembles, no single instruments, so the little string quartet at the end sounds beefier than I'd like. I bounced it separately from the other tracks and without reverb, and then added it to the final mixed song to see if that might 'thin it out' a bit, or make it sound pasted on. Please tell me what you think.

wow SJ - this is so fascinating to listen to! i can see that it needs several listens to get to the point where i'm not missing various elements as they go by, because there are so many cool ones in here! for what it's worth to you, the string quartet sounds exactly right to me in terms of thick/thin and really adds so much to the way this piece resolves. SO COOL!

Thank you, Karen
I'm very gratified that you like this one, and even happier to hear that the strings are OK: on matters like that I definitely value your ears more than my own!

Thank you very much for listening and commenting.

It´s
absolutely complex. It has lots of layers and hidden sonic tricks (I really like the glitchness) I can´t be sure when it starts or ends unless I am looking at the counter of my media player.Somethig easy to get lost in it.I liked it a lot, SJ!

Always good to get the nod from you..... I have some 'unnatural' tendencies in music; it's reassuring to see that you are right there with me.

For me
Meddle is Pink Floyd at their height. Did some on say beaver. I always felt that adding tracks to a finished song always thins it , but your using logic and I use GB so I hear a mix that sounds to be leveled right. Anyway YOur music to me is always one to wait for the experimentation alone is something I study. Another great one thanks!

Yep
Meddle is one of my faves, too. I REALLY like all of side 1 after 'One of These Days', and 'Echoes' completely turned my head around when I was 11! I could have guessed you'd be a fan of that one.....

And thank you very much for the kind words about my stuff in general; the feeling is mutual. If I could produce at the rate you do, now THAT would be something!

Hey SJ,

Another banner sonic pantheon. There is certainly a glitchiness to it, but also a tension and suspense that keeps one on the edge of the seat. There aren't any single instruments in Logic? I'm surprised to hear that! But I also think that the single midi strings have a tendency to sound "pad-like" unless they are doubled or drenched in reverb. This cut has a pastoral quality to it in a way that I found soothing in a way. I think it is that fact that there are no driving "soloed" instruments making it into more of an overall tapestry. Thx Bud!---P

Thanks to you
for going with the flow on this one. Look for more ibotenic stuff in the near future. And, yeah, that lack of single instruments (a prominent feature in all my copies of LE) in Pro is one of the few things I dislike about it. I have snagged all the other instruments from LE that didn't make it to Studio and installed them, but I could really go for some single strings. Maybe I will buy someone else's strings samples when I make my first million.

HA!

one doesn't often hear NOODNIK in a song - about time!
that ending string work is just lovely. i don't know how this works, but it does.

Thank you, Anne, for the kind words AND for providing the proper spelling of 'noodnik' (how'd you know that, anyway?)

Always a pleasure to see your thoughtful comments.

Now there's a memory. You definitely have the delay-in-triplets feel. Otherwise, this is probably a bit more electronic than PF ever was. Cool track.

To tell the truth,
I had all the other stuff in place before I stumbled onto the bass part. Once I decided to leave that in, I pretty much had to keep the "noodnik" line to keep to the "One of These Days" model.

Last week I downloaded the soundtrack to the Pink Floyd in Pompeii movie, and Roger says at one point, "It's just a question of using the tools that are available..." That pretty much sums up my musical worldview, too.

Always good to see your avatar here, Victor.

I'll have to listen
a few more times because I'm getting different images, I thought it ended and then there was a bit more. A string quartet or cicadas? Thanks.

A string quartet
or cicadas, indeed. That sounds like a question for Michael Nyman.

Thank you for commenting on that "bit more", Char; it was intentional, and I'm glad it gave you pause....!

When Raymond Scott
time-travelled into the future and worked with Pink Floyd - what a couple of days that was! If only Syd had been there to see it! And I'm so glad you were there to record it for all us MJers. Of course I'm even happier to find that it was you after all and not some freaky rift in the time-space whatsit. Another Sonny Jim gem and another one for the podcast, methinks. Tracks by you are stacking up for my show, they really are. And I like the string quartet too. Not too beefy at all.

Ray Scott
is one of my all-time top heroes! I'm honored to see his name and mine in such close proximity..... (Un) true fact: Irwin Chusid gets a Hannukah card from me every year for his work in organizing Scott's musical output.

Thank you, Ian, for being such a faithful listener; I have been returning the favor lately by catching up on all the podcasts I've missed.

Best Wishes,

hey
not signed in as michael2, but just followed you over here from the comment you left on my tune. my god this is great. really into the whole sound, all of the sounds, layers, textures, everything. really impressive. you need to finish up all of the stuff on your HD (please). i really really like this one. i have the same problem with the logic string sounds too (all ensemble). a trick you may try is to get the fitch cello instrument (free) and then just layer it up. sounds pretty good; although I didn't have any probs with the string part here (you mentioned it so i was waiting for it). really nice little cameo. similar to something you would find in a song by Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra. great.

R_E_M...?
Thanks, Michael. Good idea about the fitch cello; I have it, but I didn't think to use it.....

Lately, I have been adding to the pile of unfinished tracks in my drive! Maybe August will be a good month for finishing up things, I don't know. I also haven't had time to be around here much, so I'm way behind on some of the happenings. This new account of yours is a cool idea; I will add some of your offerings to my "in progress" folder!

Thanks again for the comment; I'll see you around.

Meddle - great choice for influence
possibly best Floyd effort before the egos took over completely. The mix on this is amazing - very chrystaline - kind of hyper psychedelic. Very cool.
