Description
Looks like spring finally broke out here in the Rockies.... so I thought I would post a composition to celebrate that fact. This one is from my CD, Father to Father.

Enjoy!

Inspired!
Love that photo, is that a bee? Very cool symbol of life!

This is a lovely classical piece, Luna! It works so well... I don't know how you do it, but why ask? I just enjoy!

Thanks Ji
The bee was used because it represents the episodic nature of spring. Glad you liked it!

Beautiful
Fits springtime. Lively. Playful. With some tender touches.
Springs' breaking here too in Montreal, at long last.

Thanks for sharing.

Close up
Nice photo. Did you take it? I have a lens for extreme close ups and love the results.

The composition was a tad random for me. I liked the American elements, the sense of early American fife and drum, the haunting middle 20th Century harmonies. The cannon section reminded me of a film score, especially compared to Philip Glass, but lacked a sense of counterpoint or syncopation that my ears were longing for.

I bet there is a story behind these choices. Would love to hear it.

Alas no
It was taken from an insect site...

Yes, the randomness was actually strived for.... in that we perceive of spring as an ordered process... but in it's infinitesimal state (say the bee here), it has far more perplexity and sophistication. The small acts in nature are often beyond true human comprehension and we package it neatly for our ready comprehension. This is why the themes don't come back! You have echoed one of the biggest criticisms of my classical compositions... and I very stubbornly avoid the use of strict sonata form in an attempt to deconstruct cyclic mentality, both musically and thematically. It may be a big mistake but I'm just following my intuition with this stuff. The lack of counterpoint and syncopation are simply reflective of my limitations and shortsightedness as a composer. I compose as I learn.... so receiving thoughtful critique from persons such as yourself is very helpful. Thanks for taking the time.

...a field full of flowers all opening at once. Lovely!

Love the lush orchestral section with the little percussive change-ups.

Hi Daniel......
Sorry I'm late with my comments.....

This is one of my many favourites of yours, if not the favourite.

You can't beat a good classical piece and this is a good classical piece.

Take care.

There is such a...
...mix of elements in this number, Daniel, that I can't quite put my finger on anything that "sings of spring." The open counterpoint was very pleasant and I was hoping for more, but the number seems to have fallen into some very "minor" or modal sounds that don't lift me into spring. Maybe the snow is melting and that's where the expectation comes about 2 minutes into the number. Lots of repetition near the end -- how many measures is that? Okay. I "get" it. Now...stop. ... The range of your compositions and your collaborations and your orchestrations is really astounding and I am never disappointed when I hear your music. This one is no exception, though I may not have "liked" is as much as some others. (I hope you won't be offended by the critical remarks.)
Peace.

spring is here
i loved the woodwind quartet opening. Excellent movement and interplay between instruments. Lots of changing moods to this piece. I like it a lot. My only nit is that the percussion seemed way too loud to me and was a little distracting. Otherwise this is an excellent composition and some great sounds out of GB.

Spring-ing as Activity
I like this one. The notion of spring as the random expression of nature reveals you've taken a closer look than the traditional tones and forms we're used to. This is fresh and original (when I think it sounds like 'x' then I realise it also sounds like 'y' and on it goes until I give up). Nice orchestration - lots of interesting things going on which call for another listen...

Cheers,
Doug

I was going for a microcosmic look at spring rather than macrocosmic. Glad you are open to it... beacause, as you say, it breaks from spring pastorale traditions!
