Timsons Theme V1

Description
My good friend Timson is one of the most talented musicians I know. Every time I visit he is playing some catchy little piece on the piano. He's got GB and a keyboard, just no time right now to lay down his music. Plus it would be a learning curve as he is somewhat new to GB.

Tim was here to visit a month ago and while he was here I turned on Logic and said to him, "just play". Play he did. This little melody is a rough variation on one of the pieces he plinked around with during that session.

I asked his permission to play it and see what I come up with. Well here is version 1. I think it still needs some work as I really suck as this orchestration thing. I guess I'm just an old guitar player that wants to have a bassist, a drummer, a keyboard player and a singer. All these complex orchestra instruments just throw me.

Plus I have not come close do doing justice to the beautiful melody that Tim was laying down. He had a certain inflection, timing that made it even more than it is here.

Timson is they guy that did the whistles in my recent "Food and Drink" song. There is more music stored in this guy than I can believe. Most of it is based a round a theme like this piece is. If I could plug him in via USB and get all these pieces out it would be wonderful. I just hope that someday he finds the time to start to use his Mic, Keyboard, and GarageBand.

I will continue to make my own variations of his pieces from the Logic session. So listen for more. I hope you enjoy!

Oh... The ending on this is not done... in fact it just flat stops... I'll fix that in V2!

Mark
I've been working on a (rather long) orchestral thing for nearly 6 months now and am miles from being happy with it. I kind of missed out when we did "classical music" at school, and have little idea of the rules etc, making it really hard for me to do. To me, this sounds like you've made some really good choices melody and instrument wise. Karen is better placed to offer suggestions than me, but ..... aaaargh, what happened to the end !

Apart from the end it sounds really well done - congratulations!

This is an instant classic! Timson must be an incredible person to have themes like this floating around in his subconcious all day. This kind of inner beauty doesn't grow on trees.

Well
that makes two of us for sure! I'm sure Parichaya, Futz, Karen, or Kassia could pick 10,000 holes and weaknesses in this. I'm also convinced that if this melody were in any of their hands a truly magnificent piece would emerge!

Anyway thanks so much for the listen and the comment!

very nice start...
and yes, I hear this as a sketch, but one from a great subject, you have some room to make this swell to great heights.

My suggestion for the next step is to work on counter-harmonies and rhythm... in the beginning you just have main instruments (strings and oboe?) playing in unison together over the piano, playing the same notes. I would let them diverge from each other a bit, and alternate (hand the countermelody off from one to the other).

Nearer the end you have horns carrying a nice swell as things build. Don't forget to let the performers breathe, add some space (rests) between notes here and there :-)

Sounds very nice, I see why you like his work... but then, you are not giving yourself much credit for doing this awesome "variation" on his tune. I loved the piano work here.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Way to go Mark!!
I knew you had it in you kid! You have tons of talent my friend, you just hate to admit it. :) What a nice start...I hear many great things coming from this. It is your first orchestration and only "you" would know that!! You should be very proud that you are talented enough to do anything that you set your mind to do. This is nice and I enjoyed the listen. The ending is a bit abrupt, but oh well. You are allowed tiny mishaps, right?? You are really good and I see you continuing to grow so much in your music! Kudos friend!!

Timsons Theme
This is really a great piece to get your feet wet orchestrating. This simple yet beautiful chord progression offers all kinds of orchestrating opportunities. You did a great job creating your wall of sound, now you just need to let the instruments vary off one another. I think this is an excellent first effort at orchestrating - I look forward to hearing the next version. Thank you for sharing this!

Sounds pretty good
to me. I think you may underestimate your own ability. This being what it is, an orchestral piece, most certainly does not suck. I didn't care for how it ended, although it did leave me wanting more. I hope to hear more of your friends pieces as well as anything the "old guitar player" can put together.
Peace

I played in symphony and this sound s find as far as the wring and playing go. Id bring down the over all strings and horns down a bit in the mix. I know its a work in progress. Have you given any thought to percussion ? maybe some timp or something with low end. But it is a very nice piece. Good work!

MarkHolbrook said 190 days ago (May 2nd, 2009)
Hi Steve
Yes I pretty much ran out of time at 1am and wanted to get some feed back. Just before I posted it I was plinking on the timpani trying to think about how to use it.

My plan for V2 is this: A little more intro before launching into the primary theme. Start the theme small then perhaps on the second pass add intertwining melodies and some backing.

Continue to build it perhaps with some kind of percussion. At the primary break I want to come back down again to a simple piece and then build it one more time to the end.

Thanks so much for the comment and listen!

Piece, nicely thought out and arranged. I think you could afford a little more woodwind an oboe and flute would soar well as a counter point and a French Horn could add well to the mix. Play with it.

Timsons Theme
Mark,

It's both fun and frustrating to be around such talent isn't it? If you plan to do another mix on this I'd bring your orchestrations down volume wise, as they tend to cover the piano playing. However, that being said your backing orchestrations are a good compliment to the song. Interesting ending, a bit cut off, but I'm guessing that is what you had to work with, but I do like you ending with your backing orch on the note that you did. I do hope you get your friend to take time to put more of his music down for us to hear. Alan

sorry it took me so long
what a beautiful theme. this is a really gorgeous beginning, mark. it has a very stately, majestic feel to it. perfect tempo - not too fast and not too slow. I think some percussion would really help move this along and you could also use it to really emphasize some of the natural swells in the song. the way you have layered this and gradually add instruments is absolutely lovely. in the beginning, when the strings and woodwinds are playing in unison with the piano - you have horns underneath holding chords - bring those up a little in the mix. they are a gorgeous support under the moving theme.

sigh...mark this is so beautiful. another idea to help differentiate sections of the song is at certain points, instead of adding instruments you could take some away. right now it sounds like once something starts playing it stays playing. this theme has a natural wonderfully flowing phrasing to it. you can really emphasize that with entrances and exits - transitions. you have such a wonderful start here - i can't wait to hear what you do with version 2!

oh - and the piano is absolutely gorgeous mark!

Kassia...
...has given you some really excellent and thoughtful advice on this number and where you might go with it. I, too, feel a certain majesty to the general "feel" of the number, but would like to hear it GO to more places. Orchestration is quite a tricky business that everyone has to deal with over and over again. I like the idea of stripping away to create some variety in the overall sound. Oops...the mix just...ENDS... gotta take care of those details. (This is a great place to try out ideas and get feedback. I don't mean to be critical and hope you take it all in a spirit of helpful critique, not criticism.)
Peace.
