Description
In 1816 the 21 year old John Keats wrote the following lines:

"But when the melancholy fit shall fall
Sudden from heaven like a weeping cloud,
That fosters the droop-headed flowers all,
And hides the green hill in an April shroud"

We offer our own humble melancholic ode in song....

Lyrics
Through the Rain... (Lyrics by Daniel Staniforth)

Fork in the road
We made our own way
Nothing was owed
At the end of that day
I try not to notice
I try not to care
I'm not in your service
To that I swear

But you've come to my town
And I think I might drown
As I'm watching you now
Through the rain...

Now I look back
From the edge of a dream
The future's on track
But the past is a stream
I'm fighting the current
I'm fighting the tide
You find me abhorrent
So I hide

But it's hammering down
And I feel I might drown
As I'm watching you now
Through the rain...

I hold onto something
There's part of you here
I conjured from nothing
That I hold dear
A silhouette memory
A ghost in the dark
A fool's wish for me
But it's a start

Your death let me down
And I think I might drown
As I'm watching you now
Through the rain...

Although there's no-one around
I don't dare make a sound
When I'm watching you
Through the rain...

Rain...

Rebsie's voice is
a harp played by the wind and that back's Daniel's vocals beautifully. Inspired. Well done. Thanks.

This is very nice...
the description - your lyrics a fitting tribute - the music melancholy, nostalgic - but I get the feeling that the person wouldn't trade the memories of the past for the pain felt in the present.
LunaTrick said 178 days ago (May 13th, 2009)
That's a very good reading...
In a sense... true nostalgia is addicting isn't it?

Through The Rain
Daniel, First of all, some very fine lyrics, and your singing and delivery certanly do them justice. Rebsie's backing vocals add a depth and passion to this track that digs deep inside. Once again, the two of you have come togeather with a fantastic gift to us all. Thank You!

Very Nice Daniel...
I like the lyrics a lot. Song is very applicable here in sunny (NOT) central Oregon! Ha ha...

Lovely guitar work and singing. Rebsie's a real gem. (And I'm not just saying that because I believe her and I to be one in the same person!)

Be well friend!

BTW: Nice Keats quote (although I'm more of a George William Russell [A.E.] kind of bloke...)

You seem to be able to conjure up anyone of the goth-related greats.I feel and hear Nick Cave all over this track and having thoe backing vocals one can remember the very good album "Murder Ballads".
Another download. Thanks for the good music!

Listening a second time around
As it's raining here, a slow mellow day
watching drops falling
on the deck. . .

As lovely.

Thanks.

Fantastic colab
great use of both of your talents. Daniel - you're writing really shines here as well as the playing and composing. What's really great is how well your voices work together - exquisitely comes to mind. I here a slight hint of John Cale in your voice and in the song itself to some extent (I suppose Rebsie could be Nico in that case). Wonderful.

excellent piece.

i like the almost narrative vocals. And Rebsie's vocals with the deep reverb gives off a haunting feel of a dream. nice

now for the techie question. Are you using a ebow on the guitar solo?
Check out my latest song called One Step Over The Line
LunaTrick said 178 days ago (May 13th, 2009)
Yes Vic
It is a haunting... and she pulled it off like only she can.

And yes.. it was an Ebow solo.... I wanted the guitar to weep and wail... and that technique gave me the means to do that with no breaks between the notes. I'm glad you found it effective.

Through and Through
Marvelous, satisfying on every level. My hat is off.
Up for suggestions? On the second listening I thought running the lead vocal through a leslie might be cool. The arpeggiated guitar lines might benefit from more reverb wash. I would suggest the lyric be less linear, less complete in a story sense, you know what I mean? Less obdvious here would be way better. Switch the last two stanzas in the running order?
Maybe it needs a supportive bass line especially beneath the vocals, just like a heart beat kind of thing that walks in the transitions. The backing vocals are gorgeous...it shimmers

Mmmellow sounds
guitars & voices produce a calming effect ,,wonderful way to start my day,, thanks, the acoustic has such a wonderful clean sound,,,,, does it have a pickup? or do you just mic it? I really like how you introduce the strat.... well done

Thanks alot
The yairi has a built in pickup - but I like to mic it with my ST55 because I rely a lot on the percussive sounds made extraneous to what's inside the box... if that makes sense. I used an Ebow on the solo... and it seemed to work. Thanks!

Beautiful ballad
You are really both lighting up each other with these collabs. The mix and lyrics set such an intimate mood, and the poignant vocal is so wonderfully supported by Rebsie's accents that drift in from afar. First class.

Take care,

Hey ho, the wind and the rain!
Might have been inspired by Keats but this delightful combination put me in mind of Coleridge and the Aeolian Harp played by the wind, "that simplest lute placed lengthways in clasping casement".
"Such a soft floating witchery of sound
As twilight elfins make, then they at eve
Voyage on gentle gales from Fairy-land...
Can't quote the whole poem but it is worth a read. Thanks you two for reminding me of it.
LunaTrick said 175 days ago (May 17th, 2009)
Your comment thrills me Baz!
To be honest, the Keats lines came to me after the song was recorded - and Coleridge's invocation of Aeolus serves just as well. "A light in sound, a sound-like power in light.." is a particular line that I seek to emulate through my music. Thank you so much for reminding me of it. I suppose we could add Shelley's West WInd Lyre or Chopin's famous Aeolian Etude to the list... but I shouldn't be greedy.
