Description
Back in the day (a year ago lol) I was writing alot of songs with top 40 pop rhythm structures and an indie vocal approach (check out my "Why is it You Don't Want Me?) tune. Anyway after listening to Chris Cornell's new Timbaland project (Scream) I was inspired to detour back in that direction. The cool thing with this tune I think is that I tried to put just the right amount of space between the sparse instrumentation to allow for "imaginary" sounds, you know the sounds you hear when you listen to a tune but aren't really there. Kind of like dreaming shapes into clouds. Anyway I think it worked because I hear something different each time I listen to it. The picture that goes along with this is of the wicked cool Tempie beanie that our own 5XArms created. Should you want your own band swag, send him a note. The cost of an email to Bob - 3 minutes. Walking around in your very own band gear? Priceless!

Oh and the lyrics...I used to have a girlfriend that was addicted to those stupid free gifts that gals get when they buy a sh!tload of makeup. pay a million dollars for some estee lauder or whatever and get a cheap little bag. And she had a drawer full of all those "gifts" that she never used...

Lyrics
i was struck by you
and you were struck by me
but i was a tired sonny liston
and you were muhammad ali
you were muhammad ali
and you messed me up
i couldn't catch my breath
i couldn't keep it up

yeah you love me like the cigarette
stuck on your lip
you hold my like the clenched fist
that you keep upon your hip
you relate with a swagger
that would sissify clint
and you treat my like the cheap plastic makeup bag
that you got free with your lipstick

you were out of my league
i was out of my depth
i was treading water
i had nothing left
i had nothing left
and you were sunning on the beach
you told yourself i was just waving
i told myself you were in reach

yeah you love me like the cigarette
stuck on your lip
you hold my like the clenched fist
that you keep upon your hip
you relate with a swagger
that would sissify clint
and you treat my like the cheap plastic makeup bag
that you got free with your lipstick

i don't get you woman, but you sure got me...

imaginary sounds
I'd say it holds true for most of your comps. You always command an excellent negative space component in your wizardry. The understated guitar head with the head bobbin beat was a coup. "sissify clint" you are a lyrical chieftain Craig. Way cool swag.

somethings cooking under that tempie cap. And I don't think it's Bob's grill

excellent way of breaking down all the elements to make a whole scenerio. very slick man.

lol, yeah lots of people are slamming Cornell for "selling out" (as if he needs the money) but I think the new one is interesting. Glad you like whats cooking!

I am reading
the lyrics before playing the song (I was waiting for a download to finish before listening). Can't see much about useless gifts, until the last line, but these are really great inferiority complex love lines. I also love the 'sissify clint' image. 'Come on big boy - make my day'.
Listening now... the lyrics fit the tune perfectly. I like the sparseness - I can really imagine this growing on you - totally understand why you like it - I do too - a lot!
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

yeah every once and a while you find that partner that you know just outclasses you in every way, but you get in the ring regardless. The folly of man lol. Glad you like it!

This
is very very cool. I feel like developing a cool walk for when I listen to it on my iPod. Bob's right... the clever lyrics are wonderful. I know the gifts you're talking about. I had a girlfriend that wanted the perfume "pleasures". It came with the most useless gizmos and goo. Great song.

not waving but drowning
great song!
the recording and mixing seem right on. I like the sort of martial sounding funkiness in spots, like a less angular gang of four... lyrix up to your usual high standard, sissify clint LOL... cool outro as usual, you're really good at those. too many neat bits to comment on them all... Long live the Tempie army...

martial funkiness
If I had to name the biggest influences on my (sad excuse for) rhythm guitar i'd have to say the Clash first and Gang of Four second. Love how they throw in those short little quarter note chords here and there. I think i used up my outro credits with this one and the last two - next tune is going to have to end abruptly...anyway glad you liked it dude, looking forward to your next tune. Remember to keep me in mind for your next bluegrass/Appalachian project...

Cheap plastic make-up bag
... Tempie gold. Love that sparse guitar work Craig. The vocal has a Jeff Tweedy vibe in both the texture and the melody, one of your finest performances. Everything you do just improves on the previous composition.

Great Lyrics
To a great pop song! This is different, has a bit of 80's british vibe to it, at least in my ears. Very well arranged and performed, I love how clean it sounds, yet still leaves me with a "full" experience. The lyrics are really good, very creative and colorful. I love this!

Street pop?
Really fie lyrics - great specifics. The second vocal works great, and this angers me because when I TRY to do a second vox it's not as effective as your seeming toss-off, which seems to be all attitude. The drum to me adds a little humor in its simplicity. My personal mixing taste would be to shove the guitars and mids up, and lower the drum and even the vox a little. HOWEVER, my advice isn't necessarily good advice; I think you've got the mix it just right for achieving a kind of street-meets-pop vibe.

Oh, and about the girl: I'd say she sounds like a knockout and you might have been punch-drunk at the time. Hope you escaped her!

the streets
yeah i was trying to do a timbaland meets bedroom rock type of thing a la mike skinner - i like the way he chromes up his simple production, and for the drums i was just thinking a little drum machine plugged in next to the bed in some teenager's room lol. and my second vox are normally all attitude - once somebody reveiewed one of my tunes and asked "and who's the 12 yr old screaming in the background?" lol that to me is perfect.

and that girl didn't last long - thanks for dropping by!

Stuck on it, add 10 plays.

Love the momentum and dragging bass line.
Your voice, when it's doubled and coming out at different angles
sounds so good. What better way to express feelings then through music.

Blondie
Here's what I kept seeing, a guy sitting in the house looking out the window at this great looking blond in short shorts putting up the laundry. She's all in the sun and in love with herself, anyway, and he's sittin' in the darkened room stirring a dead cigarette in the ashtray. It's a great song and mood and picture. I did keep hearing 'flint' not clint, but they are almost the same the older he gets. Lyrics couldn't be better.
