Feter Dancing

Description
I’ve been thinking about doing something for our friend Feter McBlues for some time now. When Doadars Uncle (Doug) started up the cover-to-cover event, I figured it was time I got down to business.

This is not a cover of one of Feter’s songs, but a tune dedicated to him, as a heart-felt thank you for being MJ’s “Goodwill Ambassador” as well as a dear personal friend.

Thanks to my good friend and co-worker Elaine Bensavage for loaning me the drum, shaker, eggs, and tambourine (all imported from Syria), and a Native American Rain Dance Rattle.

Thanks also to my dear amigo Sergio Carrillo for loaning me his Charanga. (Somewhere between a Mandolin and a Lute.)

Before today, I have never played drums of any kind, or held a Charanga in my hands. The thought of my brother Feter was all the inspiration I needed!

I hope you all enjoy it!

You learn fast!
You never played these instruments before, and look what you created so quickly! This is a nice melody with a peppy feel. I'm sure our dear friend will love this. :-)

very different Mike. I like it! And you approached it head on. excellent!

the mandolin lines are great. Plus the hands on work of the drum and percussion is very cool

Not a mandolin!
It's a mandolin-like instrument from the Andes. Everything else is from Syria.

Glad you dug it bro! Hope Feter likes it...

Be well!

FETER DANCING
This is impressive ...how did you do that ? this is very creative my bro ..
its so deep and imaginary ..the set of drums sure made this so much authentic ..
but nothing like that tinkling sound ..wow ..that was great ..I m so honored
its too much for me to cherish me with a song ..I dont deserve ...thank you ..
something will remain in my heart ...this is just wonderful ...God Bless !!!!
Calchas said 169 days ago (May 23rd, 2009)
Hello brother!
I'm so thrilled you like it. I really winged it on this one...Just went with my feelings. It was great fun playing all those Syrian drums and shakers. I really dig the sound of the Charanga. Like a mandolin strung with classical guitar strings. I'll have to use this stuff again in some future tune.

You don't deserve it? Bullshit! You've stuck by me thru all of my comings and goings, and that in spite of your own considerable problems. It's the least I can do for now.

Be well dear friend!

Generous spirit
1. This has to be one of the best song names ever on MJ.
2. Your maiden voyage on the new instrumentation is a testament to your good ear.
3. Long live Feter! This song reflects the generous spirit we know Feter has... and you, evidently as well.
4. Drumroll please..... it sounds great!

Ah,
I've lured you to the school of "not knowing what you are doing." Winged it and flew high, didn't you? Sounds like you had fun. Neat. Thanks.

Micheal, your gifts keep giving,
Bravo to you Micheal, for getting Feter up on the dance floor, and for honoring him. He is truly the living breathing spirit of the MacJams community, as are you and all the others here who give so willingly of their time and talents to help and support others. But you are right to singularly honor Feter for no one is more deserving.

You do indeed learn quickly my friend as witnessed by the excellent job you've done here. Kudos for the effort and the results.

A toast to Feter, and to you Micheal Wark,

Ed

Thanks Ed
Thanks Ed. I brought the Syrian instruments home from work last night, and picked up the Andean Charanga early this afternoon. Diane left for work at 12:30, and I sat down and started fooling around with these wonderful new toys. Out came Feter Dancing! Who knew? Ha ha...

Glad you enjoyed it bro!

Be well!

Though
you usually write songs with great lyrics Michael, I don't think you needed any for this... the meaning is all in the thought behind it. It's just a very pleasant listen to instruments we don't normally get to hear in this place and I'm sure Feter will enjoy this and the sentiment behind.... you fast learner you! Sounds Authentic to me, though I've never been to Syria; who knows this could be a hit if it was played on their radio, cheers M

Loved this tune. I always have loved the sound of the mandolin. It does have the "Feter" feel to it.

Charanga
Some very fancy finger picking on the Charanga. Drums are just right and provide excellent mood for the melodic tune. Feter is the best and this is an excellent way to show it!

Take care
Bill

Mike!
What a cool surprise from you. This sounds more celtic than middle eastern but I love the drums in this at first I thought it was a loop then I read the description and It was great to see you did it all every part! right on!

Hi Tim!
Surprised me too bro! I just started jamming on these instruments, with Feter as my Muse, and all this came out.

I posted this at iComp under the World genre. World-Fusion might be more accurate. There are celtic, slavonic, and middle eastern elements in the (Andean) Charanga playing, and then the Syrian drums are played in a middle-eastern style (learned from listening to Boiled-in-Lead CD's...Ha ha...). The Shaker and Eggs are Syrian. The Rattle is Native American. So it's a real mix!

It was a fun afternoon of playing, recording , and mixing.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Be well friend!

superb
This sounds SO good. The percussion really brings it to life.
hard to believe you're doing this on unfamiliar instruments.
This reminds me a bit of a really good CD I have by Nikola Parov (called "Nikola et ses Amis, on Harmonia Mundi records). He plays Balkan, Greek, Turkish music etc. , some of it on mandolin, and some of it sounds a bit like this. Highly recommended...

Interesting work Mike - the instruments you play give the piece a very authentic sound and feel - you must have a little Arabian in you, eh?

Great job, and what a wonderful gift to a very special person...and to us all - thanks for sharing this.

This is wonderful music Mike! : )
That Feter inspired you to explore new instruments and music is one of the best things about MJs - musicians sharing their experiences and music making the world at once smaller and larger for one another. Very cool, Big Bro. Very cool.

But I appreciate the words of support. New toys...HOOO-RAY!
