Description
My previous description might have scared some away, so I've changed it to this:

This is my best work so far, in my humble opinion, and I think it's awesome!
Please take a listen, and let me know what you think!

:) (And I'm being honest about that)
_ _ _
The old, not very encouraging description, is here:

I started writing this with no idea where I would end up, and based off of a feeling. I just wanted to attempt to create a full orchestral sound. I did not have any desire to be original either. I'm not a very good judge of that anyway.

I like the first half of this more, and at the point where it begins to 'repeat' I really struggled to finish it. It probably shows, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. Of course I'd love to hear what anyone thinks of it.

Thanks for listening.

The Final Sunrise
This piece has alot of kick to it. The bottom end was really rumbling the subwoofer. The structure is very good and definitely has a wide cinematic feel to it. The melody is nicely layered and memorable. Good work.
Thanks Mike

Re: caymanjazz
Yeah... sorry about your subwoofer; I really shouldn't mix with headphones. ;) Thanks so much for the compliments!

I think I'll go and play this on some better speakers now... :)

Re: Feter
You probably did. There was a problem with the song, and I took it down as fast as I could, and put it back up. Guess I wasn't fast enough :)

Thanks though! So glad you liked it!

Subwoofer
Hey Filmscoremike. The subwoofer was rumbling in a good way. Like at the movies. I listened to it with the sub off and it is a good mix. Subwoofers are really subjective to personal taste. Too much for one person not enough for another. Trying to find a setting for the masses is a tricky thing. Once again Great job. Hope to hear more soon.
Thanks Mike

Re: Caymanjazz
Haha, great then! That's what I was going for. There's probably some definite trailer style music influence in here. I hope to make more stuff soon too. I have the time now. Made this 4 days so hopefully I'll be doing a lot more.

the way you describe this
I frankly did not think it would be very good. I was wrong. And if I have any criticism it is that you should not downplay your work so as you clearly have talent and ability. This piece sounds pretty cool, with interesting and well thought out arrangement. But I almost passed it by because the guy who wrote it had "no idea where it would end up", "did not have any desire to be original""really struggled to finish it", and he's "not a very good judge" of it anyway!

I hope I am not being too harsh because I really did enjoy your work, and I look at your comments with a certain sense of humor. But I really did almost say "no thanks" to it based on the read, so, take that for what it's worth. And furthermore - oh, it's time for me to go back to my cell - it is very pretty and has nice soft white walls...

Hey - sorry for the book - thanks for sharing this with us!

Re: Sigmund
I like novels :) I write them too, so it's alright.

Funny that you mention my description. I didn't think of it that way at all. That's actually honestly the description of this piece. But I'm glad to hear it deserves better. I'm going to change it now though. :) You're right; if I want people to listen to it, I should give people reason to.

I'm glad you decided to take the time, and ignore your fears! I'm also really glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening. And feel free to write as much as you want. I've so much to learn, so yours and everyone's feedback is greatly appreciated!

This piece has power
The rhythms are very strong and engaging and the interest for the listener in the buildup is really well crafted. Instrumentation is great and the pulse and tension are right on. The sweeping arc of the strings and the drum hits are so epic. Bravo!

You already mentioned the ending and I would highly encourage you to have a go at something that would wrap this up with more flash. I know you can do it because of what I heard in the rest of your creativity throughout the piece. Next, because I'm greedy for what I like to listen to, I challenge you to see if you can make this a little longer too. Maybe take the whole thing into a new key, or whatever - again you're a creative guy - you will figure something out that is great.

This is such a strong foundation and has such great energy I'm basing my comments on what I know is possible.

And, if you like this how it is right now, then fine, because I still do too!!

Keep well,
Doug

Re: Doug
Thanks Doug for the great feedback! I'd have to agree with you about the build up. The beginning, or first half, I feel is the strongest part of this piece. I'll try and do something more with this, like you suggest. There are some things about the end that I know I could/should change/fix, and I'm even tempted to just redo it entirely to see what else I could come up with. As far as extending it? It would be a challenge, but I'm up for it!

Thanks so much for the compliments, and comments! I'm inspired to make this even better ;)

A fine piece of work
Very nice work here Mike ... I really like the way the big orchestral sounds are tempered by little flickers and tweets of electronica ... which blend together perfectly. I think you are maybe being too hard on yourself in saying the second half isn't as good ... I understand how it feels when you struggle to get a piece to sound how you want it, but it doesn't sound that way to outside ears. It's full of good stuff right the way through.

Re: Rebsie
Thanks Rebsie! You're probably, right; I'm being too hard on it. I'm like that with the films I make; I'm the biggest critic. Glad you liked the electronic elements in it; I put them in and they worked out by pure accident. Very very happy accident, that I loved. :) Thanks for listening!

Driving
Nice rich orchestral sound on top of the percussion. The percussion really adds some excitement to the piece. I actually could have used a little more, especially building toward the end, but that doesn't take away from the lushness and intensity of the piece. Nice work.

Nice point, about the percussion toward the end. There's definitely room for improvement there. Thanks for the kind remarks!

Hangin' out in the trailer
Great movie trailer music. Well orchestrated, with that Hollywood sound. I really like the electronic/gated percussion with the Grand Cassa bass drum. I think you could even add in some different not emphasis on the staccato string line to vary the texture of those arpeggios a little (maybe just adding in a couple of woodwind stabs on the upper notes)

Not sure about the electronic sounds, it seems to muddy the mix a little near the end, but otherwise a very nice track.

Re: Bubowski
Thanks for the comments! You're right about the electronic sounds near the end; they do muddy things up a bit. I put them in with reservations; should have stuck with my gut feeling. :) I'm glad you liked it! I was definitely going for the Hollywood, traileresque kind of feel, even though I don't know where this piece actually fits in.

I'll try out the woodwind stabs, thanks; I'm definitely up for some experimenting.
