genre-bending
a HUGE leap forward from the last version, this one
definitely got the 'pro mix'. the new vocal track is soo
much improved-congrats. i like that you took out some of
the crowded synth effects as well (can't believe i just wrote
that), it comes away with hint of a country feel

as much as i like this, i agree with pgreenstone that the
vocals could use more punch somewhere, probably near
the end. maybe pick up that last verse in a higher pitch &
slightly faster tempo to drive it home?

i stole my copy-sounds even more polished in itunes. who
is jim?

hmm, a song about one woman undercutting another to get a man. sounds... classic? (or am i reading it wrong? not sure why you use "us" instead of "me" on the last line of the stanza) i'd put this under alternative rock, because of the nature of tyhe sound, which is very CD ready but has an unusual edge to it. you sound like a woman waiting, and i general like your perfectly smooth and most excellent vocals (god knows i can't sing like that), but a moment of showing your own claws vocally might have been just the perfect touch? (if you are waiting for the guy on the rebound, which i'm not sure of anymore. oh well.) very good track!

What I used was my Guild G37 acoustic, Rode NT1000
mic, Yamaha FG412 acoustic 12 string, I think the Tele
Custom electric, Fulldrive 2, Peavey Delta Blues amp,
Behringer mixer, US122 and eMac. The acoustic part is
some sort of weird open tuning that I can't quite
remember. Nice subtle blending of the original guitar
loops with the stuff I recorded in this mix. I love the new
vocals. And you kept my acoustic noodling for the end!
Always fun to work on stuff with you, Leila! Big smiles all
around!

Punchy
I really like the riff here - and the thumping, insistent
drumbeat. You`ve produced it well too.

Its a good groove and a definitely a good base. But, from
that opening the melody left me cold. It feels like its being
pulled along by the beat and groove underneath it and not
adding enough of its own to take it on anywhere new. The
singing quality is great - and it sounds clear in the
production - but maybe its a little too shiny? Or there
isn`t quite enough movement in the melody line? I don`t
know what gets me about it - and obviously lots of people
don`t think it needs any more - so maybe you should
ignore me.

I was a little disappointed that the track ended in a fade
out too - the groove seemed to promise that it might
build to something more climactic.

	Rootsy I love when the electric comes in on the chorus. My gut says it should be louder and more intense, but it has a real nice tension. Great piece.

	Much improved Jim did a great job and your vocals are better also. The one nitpick I have is that the opening bass roll on the guitar sounds great but then there is that treble note which to me is a little jarring and doesn't fit with the rest. Check out my latest song called Strange Feeling

	Great combo It has the sound of a kind of Modern Rock mentality coupled together with some southern blues. Those lyrics really grabbed me... great metaphors and a good flow. I like this song very much...
If I may offer some "respectful" criticism...

There seems to be too much time between the first verse
and the chorus. Perhaps that could be tightened up.

Also, not ALL women are evil. Some are...but usually they
have a good reason. Maybe this particular woman was
hurt, so she takes it out on all of the men she meets. A
little characterization in the song will help bring "the
truth" out for us.

That aside, I really like this song. I will now click the "add
to favorites" button!

Excellent
The drums are a combination of Jims pencil tool, Apple Loops and a beefy
kick drum layered over top. Normal did all the production on the Drums, but
I think he used a comperssor/limiter and EQ.

My not so secret secret for clear vocals, place the mic vertically as opposed to
horizontally. I don't know why this works, but singing under the mic gives
the sound more clarity and less of a nasal sound.

By the way...
Thanks for the compliments on the guitars. Some of the guitars are standard GB loops, I should admit, but the electric in the chorus is something I'm fairly proud of playing. And there's a couple acoustic parts that get blended in really well in the mix. The annoying high note on the acoustic at the beginning is something I'm fully responsible for, but hey, I liked it when I recorded it. I was going for a Leo Kottke in-your-face feel, but I lack the chops these days for that kind of muscular acoustic playing.
The drum track I added was actually not penciled but various Drums On Demand loops. I wish I could pencil like that! I love Drums on Demand.

Of a mixed mind about this
Well I enjoyed it for sure! I think the music is great, and
and the vocalist sounds quite nice, but I'm not 100% on
the actual lyrics. Seems like there are ryhmes that don't
resolve and a few awkward phrasings. That said, that
could totally be taken as a stylistic choice, but I say it
could be upgraded to total popability. Would love to hear
a revision along those lines.

rich and full
The very thick and rich texture throughout this tune is
almost overwhelming. It's like eating something intensely,
concentratingly sweet, or breathing in a very heady,
strong spice.

I do like the layering of the various guitars and
combination of loops (very well done!) but it's almost too
busy because the thick texture doesn't vary throughout
the song. I think it would have been much more effective
had it been alternated with sections of thinner texture,
with less going on.

The vocals seem a bit low-key and don't quite balance the
complex background accompaniment, or the intense
lyrics. It might have been good to kick the vocals up a
notch, in intensity of feeling and delivery. Either that or
thin out the accompaniment.

Thanks for sharing the "back story" on this tune. The
lyrics are very good!

Catch my breath
Yeah, that's tasty guitar. The acoustic blues is a really fun riff and the section with the electric represents a terrific choice of combining tones. The playing is spot on! Really nice choices on the drum track as well.

You have a great sense for producing vocals. The treatment here reminds me of some of the tactics employed with much success by Cheryl Crow.

I think this is a killer song. The one trick I might suggest is to create a pause in there somewhere. Something that drops the drums entirely and allows a single chord to ring. The rhythm is pretty consistent throughout and a four beat breath before or after a chorus will let the rhythm hit the listener fresh again before the final stretch.
