Description

Trying to do something interesting with limited means: a diatonic 2-octave indian flute. Sampled, of course. This piece is so short because it's a kvraudio competition entry, which limits it to 2 minutes.

In a way this is a very abbreviated version of what I imagine a music circle in some far away country must be like. A bunch of percussion players laying down a carpet of interlocking rhythms, and over it the master musician who gradually unfolds a long developing solo. If you listen to the flute part it first plays only 2 notes, then 3, then 4, then gradually swoops into the heights.

And all that in 2 minutes.....

Fire the Flautist
Nice drums to begin with.

Hate to say this but the flute sample sound out of tune. I
don't see how the there is any cohesion at all in this one.
While you were definetely going for something simple, it
almost sounds really complicated between the out of tune
flute sample and the rhythmic blanket that you set out.

My opinion is that you should just do away with the whole
flute sample, it really is not good sounding. Where on the
web did you get this?

Not to be critical but from an honest standpoint I really
think that you are capable of a whole lot more production
wise.

Also the bass line just kind of barges in and almost
sounds like it is in the wrong key. I also think that EQ
could do a lot to help out that flute or the whole pallette
of sound here. The flute was really shrill.

The rhythm track was alright, but it really could stand
some compression and perhaps gate. I did also like the
synth pad like sounds that you had below everything.

I see what you were going for with this one......but it
needs a lot of work before I think that it is up to
compettion standard. I assume that you are planning on
doing this and that is why you put here in the first place.

That is just my opinion though, and I hope that my input
helps you out. Let me know if there is any thing that you
don't understand.

Oh ya I like the album artwork that you have choosen.

I am not playing any mind games with you or anyone else and you know that.
I gave you what I thought was an honest and fair review as you have done to
me many times. I assume that you appreciate the truth and honesty rather
than some fake and non suggestive praise as it helps you to improve. I
myself know that I have improvements to make in my work, and quite frankly
all of us do. I trust that you understand my intentions, and if you don't then
to please ask me about them. They truly are true and honest. No time for
games. Music sure takes enough time in itself wouldn't you say?

PS-I still disagree with the flute sample. I know your synth has a better
sounding one than that. To each their own though if you do really like it. I

	Interesting But Too Short You should consider taking this and developing it some more. Towards the end, the flute playing became jazzier than I might associate with Indian music, which perke up my ears a bit. Perhaps a series of calls /responses between the percussion and the flute, playing off each other ? That does depend of course on the flexibility of your percussion software.

Nice tune
I don't like electronic music. At least I didn't think I did.
The bass and flute do it for me. And its actually the
"rough" sound of the flute - sounds "organic", something
that I've decided is a trait often found in music I like. Like
the cello sound in "Cello Mello", I want to really hear the
instrument, not just the notes. Listening a little more and I
hear that the percussion also sounds "organic". And it
seems somewhat playful to me, maybe influenced by
my young children clapping, dancing, and generally
bopping about.

If this were an album, I would hope that the next song
would keep the flute at the lower, breathy tones, and
maybe include the cello, both going along with the flute
and sometimes as a counter melody. And I'll bet more
bass would add even more interrest.

This is my first attempt at a "review", so I hope I haven't
violated any conventions or whatever :) But like an ice
skating judge, I'll keep my scores somewhat under control
:) (though higher than the current avergage I think) so that
I have room to raise them for other tunes.

It seems to me you have achieved what you set out to do - creating something of interest with a limited number of instruments in an imaginative setting over a short span of time. I like the flute - I find it fresh and surprisingly expressive, and if you can get that kind of a reaction from a listener out of an instrument that's been around for - what? - 15,000 years or more, that's pretty cool. I like short pieces that make complex, concise statements. Your flute does just that, yet retains an air of informality, as if it was something tossed off by the master musician while jamming down at the marketplace. If there's anything incongruous, it might be the synth sound mixing with the "native" instruments, but that's only if you are looking for imaginative purity in the vision of a "far way country," rather than recognizing the synth's ability to add atmosphere to almost any composition.

	It wanders... ...which at first I thought was going to annoy me and then all of a sudden I realized I liked it. I agree with Mungo that I think it's because it started to have a jazz improv feel to it and seemed less aimless. Definitely worth expanding, I'd like to hear a longer version of it.
